Course overview

**Due to the ongoing & evolving Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, all CPD courses have been cancelled until further notice. Delegates who have already booked onto a course will be offered full refunds in due course.**

This 2-day course is for intermediaries who have not yet completed a one-day basic workshop on WwD and would now like to participate in a wider intermediary service and prepare to work with vulnerable defendants.

Day 1 will focus on increasing understanding of the whole criminal process, improve intermediary work with witnesses and prepare for intermediary work with defendants by extending understanding of the knowledge and skills needed to work with vulnerable defendants.

Day 2 will focus on evaluating the current challenges in the court approach to the use of intermediaries, offer the opportunity to discuss controversies in our work e.g. boundaries, asserting our role and consider how we may develop the professionalism of the role further.

Throughout both days participants will share their experiences as well as being provided with other real (anonymised) cases to discuss. The course will help participants look at solutions to complex issues. We will also spend some time on the real practice of simplifying language.

We will consider:

  • The key differences for intermediaries who have been trained to work with witnesses only.
  • A step by step review of the entire intermediary process from referral to the end of your intermediary work: assessment, report writing, ‘special measures,’ memory refresh practicalities, suspect interviews, conferences, trial and addressing the practical and emotional challenges of this work

The City Law School will deliver this CPD course in conjunction with Intermediaries for Justice (IfJ). The course will be run in the form of a small group workshop with high levels of participation and sharing of knowledge and ideas.

Course Facilitators: Paula Backen, Rachel Cohen and Robin Sellers.

This course is for IfJ members only. For further information on IfJ and how to become a member please visit IfJ's website.
