This course explores and analyses key concepts and theoretical frameworks underpinning effective leadership in healthcare. It facilitates the development of leadership skills and characteristics necessary for transformational leadership as a means of maximising the patient experience and providing best practice in service delivery in a healthcare context. You will explore leadership at three levels: individual leadership, leading teams and organisational leadership.
The overall aim of this course is to help you to develop the knowledge, skills and awareness that enable professionals and managers to transform their practice through reflective leadership and in so doing achieve world-class standards of performance.

This course is designed to benefit professionals working across all healthcare settings, whether in clinical, educational or managerial roles.

This module opens for general orientation and exploration from Tuesday 21 September 2021.
Thereafter from Tuesday 5 October to commence weekly activities.
This module will be delivered asynchronously, however our module leader will set up regular drop ins for students.

Assessment and certificates
Teaching
This is an e-learning course which is completed over a term. This may suit students ‘who are seeking a more flexible approach to study. The concepts of leadership from an individual perspective, leadership in teams and organisational leadership are explored on line in discussion forums and supported with telephone or face to face tutorials.
Assessment
There will be ongoing formative assessment and feedback on a weekly basis via the discussion forums. In these forums you will engage with your fellow students as well as the course leader to engage with a variety of topics concerning leadership.
The summative assignment is a 3,000 word essay in which you will analyse a change process in your workplace. In this essay you should focus on the external motives for change, internal consequences of the process, tools and techniques employed and the impact on yourself and your team.
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded 15 credits at level 6. Students will receive a certificate of completion.
You will be assessed on:
- Engagement with compulsory online activities and discussions via Moodle discussion forums. These will be tutor assessed and contribute 10% to your final mark.
- A 3000 word essay, which will contribute to 90% of your final course mark.

Non EEA students can only apply as part of a programme, not as a stand-alone course.
Entry requirements for BSc Health Sciences (online) programme:
- 120 Level 4 credit points and 120 Level 5 credit points in healthcare-related subjects
Entry requirements for study as a stand-alone course:
- Current registration with a professional and regulatory body (healthcare)
English requirements
If your first language is not English, one of the following is required:
- A first degree from a UK university
- A first degree from an overseas institution recognised by City, University of London as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions from Australia, Canada or the United States of America.
- International English Language Test Service (IELTS) a score of 7.0 is required with no subtest below 7.0
- Pearson Test of English (Academic) score 72 required
- TOEFL 100 overall with 24 in Writing, 20 in Listening, 19 Reading and 20 Speaking
- Other evidence of proficiency in the English language, which satisfies the board of studies concerned, including registration with your professional regulator.
