Airline Strategy and Business Planning

Airline Strategy and Business Planning has been designed to present and discuss  two essential elements for the successful development of any airline: a solid strategy and a robust business plan.

Plenty of airlines have failed in the past, for various reasons, so that learning these lessons will help better prepare for the future. Not having one or both of the above elements certainly explains these failures. It is, though, not as easy to set up a winning proposition for a new entreprise as planning an airline’s business is complex: it is highly cash intensive, competition is always relentless, and the resulting profitability is mostly razor-thin.

This core module of the MSc Air Transport Management provides a blend of all theoretical concepts and definitions around Strategy and Business Planning with hands on examples coming directly from the airline industry. You will be invited to share knowledge and engage in various interactive moments that will create a true sharing environment among all participants, which has proven to be the best way to assimilate all concepts.

Who is it for?

This course is for anybody interested in learning about how to design and implement a successful commercial airline, including: airline staff, consultants, investment bankers, state representatives, anybody curious about the industry

• 9am - 4pm (with one hour lunch)

Benefits

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

• Critically analyse an airline business model and the respective business plan it’s based on;
• Define and discuss market dynamics and the impact thereof on the airline planning function;
• Formulate an airline strategy and the key elements of a business plan and their importance for an airline.

The module will enable you to:

• Critically evaluate concepts and definitions around strategy, business modelling, business plans, stakeholder engagement and many others all applied to the airline industry;
• Define goals, components and relationships of a good airline business plan;
• Analyse strategic elements of a prospective business situation applied to the airline business;
• Identify key issues for success or failure of a business plan, as well as major risk factors in a proposed airline venture.

There is no assessment or coursework with this CPD. Students will be asked to submit a reflective journal about the topics covered and will receive a certificate of participation.
