About
In a time of rapid social and political change we help students develop the knowledge and research skills to engage with the key challenges and issues that are shaping policy formation and public debate.
Our students receive a top-class education that is consistently informed by cutting-edge research and delivered by internationally recognised leaders in their fields. As a result, we achieve consistently high results for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey.
Through the study of global political systems we enable students to draw connections between economic, political and social processes driving major change on an international scale.
We seek to bring understanding to the history and politics behind real-life issues such as financial crises, security, migration and climate change.
At postgraduate level students can focus their studies on areas of specific interest, including diplomacy, foreign policy and human rights.
From summer 2022, the Department forms part of City’s new School of Policy and Global Affairs .
This will provide new opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with the Department of Economics, and build on our existing work with the Department of Sociology and Criminology.

Research
The Department has developed internationally-renowned research strengths in international relations, foreign policy and diplomacy, international political justice, and international political economy.
In the recent Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, which measures the quality and impact of research in universities across the UK, 85% of our research was rated as being of 4* (world-leading) and 3* (internationally excellent) quality. This ranks us as one of the leading Departments in the UK for the quality of our research.
We have established three thriving research centres and think-tanks:
- City Political Economy Research Centre (CITYPERC)
- Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS)
- Centre for Modern History
This helps to create a dynamic and vibrant environment for academics, research students, partners and collaborators who work with us, and we offer excellent facilities for visiting scholars and researchers.
Our academics are frequently called upon to provide expertise and comment on areas including:
- Political economy and global finance
- Foreign policy and diplomacy
- Global ethics and international human rights
- The politics of the US, the Middle East and Europe
- Security Studies
- Religion in contemporary politics
- Forced population displacement
- International development
- Global civil society and social movements.
We actively engage in various international research networks which enhance both academic understanding and international policy-making.
