We help you to unpick complex concepts that shape our understanding of the world and identify their impact on global events.

This is a constantly evolving subject in a rapidly changing world. As such you will explore unique specialisms supported by up to the minute research.

You will graduate with the ability to undertake in-depth research, confidently challenge explanations of social and political life, and evaluate international relationships between major bodies including governments and transnational networks.

If you want to widely explore international politics and human rights before specialising your knowledge in one area, this programme is ideal.

Our programme is designed to give you the freedom to approach big global questions in your own individual way.

Duration:

  • Full-time: 12 months
  • Part-time: 24 months

  • Core modules: 2
  • Full-time duration: 12 months

    Part-time duration: 24 months (with an additional 3 months to submit dissertation if required)

    Modules

    You will study:

    • two 30-credit core modules, one in each term, totalling 60 credits
    • elective modules totalling 60 credits, which include 15 and 30 credit options
    • 60 credit dissertation in the third term (with submission in September of that year).

    You must also attend the dissertation workshops that are offered by the department, a compulsory and important part of the MA programme.

    Core modules

    • Human Rights and the Transformation of World Politics (30 credits)

      This module provides you with an advanced overview of the theory, history and practice of human rights, with a focus on how the development of human rights has changed the nature of world politics in the 20th and 21st centuries.

    • Global Ethics: Principles, Power and Politics (30 credits)

      This module introduces you to the traditions of ethical thought in international politics by looking at pressing issues in today’s world, such as state and non-state violence, poverty and suffering and issues of political inequality in an hierarchical international system.

    Elective modules

    • Understanding Security in the 21st Century(15 credits)

      This module aims to provide you with an advanced and comprehensive overview of international security in the 21st century. Specifically, it seeks to understand the issues, actors and solutions that drive security agendas in various parts of the world.

    • International Organisations in Global Politics (15 credits)

      The module will provide you with an introduction to the politics of policy-making in the main international organisations. The traditional distinction between intergovernmental organisations and international non-governmental organisations will be made, but in addition attention will be given to the legal and theoretical significance of hybrids

    • Theories of International Politics (30 credits)

      The module provides an inclusive view of theoretical approaches to the study of international relations/politics by allowing you to examine dominant and contemporary theories, such as realism, liberalism, Marxism as well as post-structuralism, feminism, green politics, post-colonialism, and constructivism.

    • Cultural Logics of Contemporary Capitalism (15 credits)

      The purpose of this module is to introduce the key concepts, approaches, and debates in Cultural Political Economy, and to provide an opportunity for in-depth study of the cultural logics at work in one or more aspect of contemporary capitalism

    • Global Capitalism: Past, Present, Future (30 credits)

      This course traces the evolution of global capitalism from its structure in the interwar era to its present-day globalising tendencies. It focuses on three interrelated themes: the internationalisation of production, the globalisation of finance and the changing nature of political authority, or the state.

    • Political Economy of Global Finance (15 credits)

      This module provides you with a critical review of the key institutions and processes in the global financial system, with a particular emphasis on the connections between these institutions and processes of the development in the international political system.

    • The Politics of Forced Migration (15 credits)

      This module provides an intellectually demanding and interdisciplinary route to understanding forced migration in contexts of conflict, repression, natural disasters, environmental change and development policy-making.

    • Global Governance (15 credits)

      This module critically examines the changing character of governance in global politics. It focuses on the key actors and mechanisms involved in attempts to govern, regulate and control processes and issues in contemporary global politics.

    • International Politics of the Middle East (15 credits)

      This module provides an advanced overview of the International Politics of the Modern Middle East and gives a critical understanding of the key dynamics shaping the International Politics of the region since 1918.

    • Strategy, diplomacy and decision-making (30 credits)

      This module compliments the material covered in the Foreign Policy Analysis and Economic Diplomacy modules, to explore practical approaches to the formulation of policy options, decision-making and negotiation in both the public and private sectors.

    • Economic Diplomacy (15 credits)

      This module will analyse the theoretical and practical dimensions of negotiations and decision-making processes in the world economy. The deadlock in the WTO multilateral trade negotiations and negotiations for an international climate change agreement are some of the issues you will discuss.

    • Foreign Policy Analysis (15 credits)

      The module covers a variety of issues in the study of foreign policy by engagement with the theoretical and practical dimensions of Foreign Policy Analysis. Themes include rationality and foreign policy; the role of domestic actors; the impact of bureaucracies; foreign policy leadership

    • Global Political Economy: Contemporary Approaches (30 credits)

      This module serves as a conceptual and theoretical introduction to the field of (global) political economy. It surveys the three main traditions of scholarship in political economy (mainstream, institutionalist and Marxist), and allows you to critically engage with different schools of thought on capitalism.

    • Russian Foreign Policy from Stalin to Putin (15 credits)

      In this module we will follow the history of Soviet/Russian foreign policy from the spectacular victory over the Nazis in WWII, through the Cold War years and the post-Soviet period, and into our days.

    • Visions of World Order: Ideas and Concepts in the History of International Thought (15 credits)

      This module explores theories of World Order in western internationalist thought during the twentieth century. It proceeds thematically through a historical examination of the different ways in which ‘international’ space has been theorised by intellectuals and policy makers.

    • History of East Asia (15 credits)

      This module examines the transformation and development of East Asia, focusing geographically on China, Japan, and Korea. The emphasis will be on the modern period, after encounters with expansionist European empires in the middle of the nineteenth century.

    • Revolutions in Modern History (15 credits)

      This module will provide a broad, comparative overview of revolutions in modern history. We will consider the Atlantic Revolutions which shook the West in last quarter of the eighteenth to the popular mass protests and revolutionary movements which have transformed the modern world.

    • Developments in Communication Policy (15 credits)

      This module provides an introduction to the debates surrounding the communications policy process and an analysis of developments in communications policy. It examines important policy developments in audio-visual, telecommunications as well as new media

    • Transnational Media and Communication (30 credits)

      This module is intended to provide knowledge of transnational media, cultures and practices, along with an understanding of the impact of globalisation on media and communication.

    • Criminal Minds (15 credits)

      This module is intended to do two things. First, develop an applied understanding of the criminal mind at work in the context of extreme human violence. Second, to outline the parameters of the emerging psycho-social field of ’de-humanisation’ studies

    • International Human Rights in Law and Practice (30 credits)

      Through this module you will be challenged to appreciate international human rights law’s philosophy, rules and structure, as well as human rights practice from the perspective of UN rights infrastructure, regional bodies, international NGOs, human rights practitioners and the constituencies of victims.

    • International Criminal Law: Crimes & Institutions ( 30 credits)

      This module looks at how we deal with the worst atrocities on the international scale. How does the international system decide which acts are punished? How has this system developed over time and why is it relevant today?

    • Law and War (30 credits)

      This module deals with the legal regime governing the use of force and the legal regulation of armed conflict. It explores the tension between the state-centric nature of international law and the role that non-state armed groups play in situations of armed conflict.

    • Minorities and Indigenous Peoples in International Law (30 credits)

      This module covers the developing legal principles that underpin the rights of minorities and indigenous peoples. It will help you to develop a comprehensive understanding of international human rights norms and standards concerning minorities and indigenous peoples in a legal, political and moral context.

    Dissertation

    • MA Dissertation (60 credits)

      This module will enable you to acquire the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to design, conduct and present a 15,000-word dissertation. It will facilitate a theoretical understanding and a practical knowledge of the main methods used in social research as well as the ethical principles that guide it.

    Teaching and assessment

    You will learn from our academic experts and from industry professionals offering insights as part of the Practitioner Series.

    The Practitioner Series is our programme of talks from visitors and alumni working within organisations such as The Refugee Council and Amnesty International.

    Our staff are research active and deeply passionate about their work. Their research often prompts media appearances and can lead to policy change.

    We assess each taught module by an essay. This is either a 5,000-word essay for a 30-credit module or a 3,000-word essay for a 15-credit module. Your final MA marks will be derived from a combination of your essay and dissertation grades.

    You will submit a dissertation of 15,000 words on a topic agreed with your personal tutor/supervisor.

      You should have a first or upper second-class honours (or equivalent) degree in politics, the social sciences, humanities or law. However, we also welcome applications from those with substantial experience in human rights organisations, NGOs, social services, journalism and other related sectors.
