About
International Politics at City
Situated right at the heart of one of the world's greatest financial and political centres, the Department of International Politics combines world-leading research with exceptional education in international relations and international political economy.
The department has developed focused research programmes, with an emphasis on international relations, foreign policy and diplomacy, international political justice, and international political economy.
It hosts thriving think tanks:
- City Political Economy Research Centre (CITYPERC)
- Centre for International Policy Studies (CIPS)
- Centre for Modern History
Our students receive a top-class education that is consistently informed by cutting-edge research and delivered by internationally recognised leaders in their fields.
Students learn from and work with leading academics and skilled practitioners. We have consistently high student satisfaction, achieving at least 80% for overall satisfaction in the 2019 National Student Survey (NSS) for teaching.
Through our range of courses, students develop the knowledge and research skills to engage with the key challenges and debates that are shaping policy formation and academia in a rapidly changing world.

Research Excellent Framework (REF) 2014
The department is celebrating the confirmation of our status as an internationally excellent research-led teaching department.
The Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 rated 57% of our research as either 'world leading' (4* - 17%) or 'internationally excellent' (3* - 40%).
Our 4* research outputs place us at 23rd position out of 56 departments and units evaluated in REF2014, ahead of many well-established departments, an excellent result.
Our research environment is improving rapidly as is the impact of our research in policymaking and the media. This is the Department's first REF since we were formed just 7 years ago and represents a very solid foundation for the future.
