Who is it for?

This programme is for students who want to engage with a wide range of industrial, commercial and research aspects of the energy sector. A focus on the current challenges and future opportunities leads students to research and investigate the implications of the many factors, environmental, technological, social and political, that influence the energy sector. It provides students with the knowledge and tools to identify pathways towards a more sustainable future, and ultimately enhances their ability to improve conditions for the wider population.

Students on the programme come from a range of backgrounds including engineering, environmental studies, finance, economics and law as well as professionals from the energy sector. Graduates from this programme have gone on to hold key and influential jobs in the energy industry and services.

This MSc degree has been designed to give you a wide perspective when it comes to analysing and forecasting the future for energy, environmental technology and economics.

The Energy and Environmental Technology and Economics MSc will help you:

  • Understand the technologies for energy production: fossil fuels, nuclear and renewable
  • Assess the economic factors affecting energy production and supply
  • Know the economics governing consumer use and purchase of energy
  • Analyse and forecast the future of energy, environmental technology and economics

Energy Institute

Accredited by the Energy Institute on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Candidates must hold a CEng accredited BEng/BSc (Hons) undergraduate first degree to comply with full CEng registration requirements.  The programme also contains pathways to qualify as further learning for accreditation with the Energy Institute for Chartered Energy Manager (CEM).  All students qualify for free student membership of the Energy Institute.

Entry requirements

A Bachelor’s degree with lower second class honours or above, or overseas equivalent in a discipline related to energy and the environment (for example, energy management and economics, energy policy, environment or engineering).

INTO City, University of London

More about fees

* Fees in each subsequent year of study (where applicable) will be subject to an annual increase of 2%. We will confirm any change to the annual tuition fee to you in writing prior to you commencing each subsequent year of study (where applicable).

If a student leaves City after commencing but before completing their course, City reserves the right to charge the student the tuition/course fee for the full academic year (or full course for capacity limited post-graduate courses - up to a maximum of 2 years fees) in question. The student may be charged the full fee for that year or course as applicable unless the student is able to present justification that exceptional and unforeseeable reasons for their withdrawal exist.

How to pay

City has introduced an instalment payment scheme which is available to certain categories of students, including taught postgraduate students. For students following the normal academic year, the annual fee may be paid in two equal instalments: the first on registering, the second on 31st January. If you wish to pay your fees by instalment you must pay the first instalment at or before registration, by cheque or credit/debit card. You must also supply your bank details or credit card details for payment of your second instalment which will be deducted automatically from your bank or credit card account on 31st January.

Recent projects

The Optimised Microturbine Solar Power system (OMSoP) project

The Optimised Microturbine Solar Power system (OMSoP) project was led by City Professor of Energy Engineering, Professor Naser Sayma. Co-funded by the European Union's 7th Framework Programme for Research and Development, project aims to provide and demonstrate technical solutions for the use of state-of-the-art concentrated solar power system (CSP) coupled to micro-gas turbines (MGT) to produce electricity. The intended system will be modular and capable of producing electricity in the range of 3-10 kW.


There is no formal requirement to do an industry-based placement as part of the programme. However, some students arrange to undertake their dissertation research within a company or within their part of the world. A recent student investigated the future of coal-fired generation in Turkey, and another student is combining a work placement at The World Energy Council with their dissertation.

Course content and assessment

Teaching and learning

Teaching is organised into modules comprising four consecutive day courses taken at a rate of one a month or so. This format makes the programme accessible for students who want to study part-time while working. Full-time students are also welcome. Whether you choose to take the course as a part-time or full-time student, we will offer a great deal of support when it comes to helping you prepare for the modules and project work. You will be expected to devote a significant part of your non-taught hours to project work as well as private study.

Our course is led by an exceptional group of experts in energy, supply, demand management and policies. As an example, one of our module leaders leads the UK contribution to writing international energy management standards and informing policy through the European Sector Forum for Energy Management. This forum looks at methodologies across the continent.

There is also input to global standards development through the International Standards Organisation (ISO). At City we bring on board people with well-established academic careers, as well as leaders from the energy industry. The programme has strong links with industry and commerce and involves many visiting lecturers who hold senior positions in their fields.

You will be assessed by examination on the four core modules and you will need to complete a post modular assessment (a 2,000 to 3,000-word essay) on all of the eight modules.


A 12-month full-time option during which you attend all the taught modules during terms 1 and 2, and complete your Project within the 12-month period of the degree.


A 27-month part-time option during which you attend half the modules in a first 12-month period, followed by the other half the next year.

Students are expected to complete all the modules in this two year period. The teaching periods are structured to deliver core modules in a sequence which permits engagement by part-time students alongside full-time students. The dissertation project is undertaken by part-time students in the second year.


You will take four core modules and choose four elective modules from seven available, covering diverse subjects relating to energy supply and demand. If you wish to pursue further learning for Chartered Engineer or Chartered Energy Manager accreditation, you must take module EPM403 among your elective options (see below). You are normally required to complete all the taught modules successfully before progressing to the dissertation.

If we have insufficient number of students interested in an elective module, this may not be offered. In rare cases, one or two elective modules may not run due to low interest or unanticipated changes in timetabling, including scheduling clashes, room and staff availability. If an elective module will not run, we will advise you at the beginning of every academic term or as soon as possible, and help you choose an alternative module.

Each course module is taught over four consecutive days of teaching with one module each month. Alongside the teaching, you will have coursework to complete for each module. The modules run from October to April, and in the remaining time, you will concentrate on your dissertation, which forms a significant part of the programme.

The dissertation gives you the opportunity to create your own questions and to decide on your own area of interest. It should be a detailed investigation into a subject on energy supply and/or demand, with your own analysis and conclusions outlining the way forward. If you wish to pursue further learning for Chartered Engineer accreditation, you must take module EPM799 as your dissertation option (see below).

You will choose four of the following seven elective modules. If you wish to pursue further learning for Chartered Engineer or Chartered Energy Manager accreditation, you must take module EPM403 among your options.

  • EPM727: Energy in Industry and the Built Environment (15 credits)
  • EPM723: The Energy Market and Energy Trading (15 credits)
  • EPM403: Risk Management (15 credits)
  • EPM610: Water Supply and Management (15 credits)
  • EPM993: Distributed Power Generation and Smart Grids (15 credits).


You will choose one of the following two dissertation options. If you wish to pursue further learning for Chartered Engineer accreditation, you must take module EPM799 as your dissertation option, which specifies additional learning outcomes required for CEng accreditation. All other students may take either dissertation option.

The story of energy is now part of public debate and climate change drives the international agenda. In the UK, there are additional energy supply issues, through the decline of existing nuclear capacity, growing imports of fossil fuels and challenging medium-term targets for renewables and low carbon supply.
