    Maritime Operations and Management MSc Course overview

    Who is this course for?

    This MSc is designed for existing professionals serving in the industry as well as those looking for a career within maritime, offshore and sea transport trade.

    You may already have a responsible sea-going or middle management position and be qualified to that level but want to achieve the next level in your career. If you are new to the industry it’s likely you’ll have a degree in a related technical or management subject.

    Master of Science (MSc)

    Duration:

    • Full-time: 12 months
    • Part-time: 48 months (up to)

    Modules:

    Modules

    Full-time

    Full-time students attend seven Core and two Elective taught Modules over two Terms, and then complete their Dissertation over three months in the summer, within the 12-month period of the degree. You are normally required to complete all the taught modules successfully before progressing to the dissertation.

    The course is delivered in the form of block teaching where students usually need to attend three, four or five full consecutive days for each Module. Teaching takes place during day (09:00 to 18:00).

    Part-time

    The course on a part-time basis normally takes just over two years (but can extend up to five years). In two years, students are expected to complete the seven Core and two Elective taught Modules, plus a Dissertation. You are normally required to complete all the taught modules successfully before progressing to the dissertation.

    Part-time students join full-time students for their chosen modules in each academic year.

    Core modules

    • Professional Studies (15 credits)

      This module will introduce you to knowledge and skills to prepare you in taking a professional approach to studying at Masters Level and beyond into your career. The module explores the qualities of being a professional and a learner in the Maritime Industries.

    • Maritime Technology (15 credits)

      This module is an intensive introduction to marine technology, machinery and related systems control and monitoring. The aim of this module is to provide future senior managers with working knowledge of principles, practice and management of present and future technologies for marine applications

    • Maritime Operations and Insurance (15 credits)

      This module focuses on the theory and practice of effective management of maritime operations. The aim of this module is to provide an overview of maritime operational procedures and practices within a senior management context.

    • Maritime Law (15 credits)

      This module is an intensive introduction to maritime, shipping and commercial law. You will gain a knowledge of principles, practices and case examples of the law as it relates to operations, technology, economics and management in the sector.

    • Maritime Economics and Accounting (15 credits)

      This module focuses on the economic and financial environment within which maritime industries operate, in particular organisations that own, operate or manage shipping. Senior managers need to understand the economic and financial framework that drives this competitive and volatile industry.

    • Maritime Management (15 credits)

      This module focuses on the theoretical and empirical evidence which informs modern management (innovation and research) in the maritime industries. You will explore the principles of management in the maritime industry and gain experience working in teams.

    • Environmental Issues (15 credits)

      This module will enable you to explore the technical base and legislative framework for environmental issues as they relate to marine transport and operations. The focus will be on the principles of auditing of maritime projects against environmental data.

    Elective modules

    • Ports, Strategy and Development (15 credits)

      This module focuses on the theoretical and empirical evidence which informs modern management, innovation relating to Port Strategy and Development. The aim of this module is to provide an intensive introduction to the principles of management which inform Port and Terminal Management.

    • Security Studies (15 credits)

      This module is concerned with critically examining in-depth investigation procedures, research and innovation. The module explains the need for appropriate security measures to counter various threats and to deal effectively with crises and investigations of accidents and incidents.

    • Marketing of Maritime Services (15 credits)

      This module focuses on the application of marketing techniques to typical maritime enterprises in order to understand their impact upon, and improving the performance of, their organisations.

    • Ship Design (15 credits)

      In this module you explore research and good practice tools and methods that can be integrated effectively into the design of marine equipment and systems. You will gain simulated experience of ship design as a way into appreciating the multi-disciplinarily skills required.

    • Offshore Engineering and Operations (15 credits)

      In this module you will develop analytical and design skills of maritime related projects in order to enable you to undertake rational decisions regarding the technology of marine operations.

    • Risk Management (15 credits)

      In this module you will examine the theory and practice of risk management in maritime environments. You will identify the elements of risk analysis, modes of potential failure through a range of investigative approaches, and connect relevant theory to risk management plans.

    Dissertation

    • Project (45 credits)

      The dissertation is an opportunity to explore in-depth a topic and to develop it into a detailed investigation that has current relevance. This will provide you with experience in managing an investigation, in which you can demonstrate independent thinking and professional expertise.

    Teaching and assessment

    You will learn from experienced lecturers who come from academia and industry. They are supported by guest lecturers from various parts of the marine industry.

    Each subject you study will have coursework comprising essays where you’ll be expected to give examples of critical analysis.

    The course is organised so that each module is taught in a block of three to five days followed by tutorial support, guided private study, coordinating activities, and coursework.

    The course comprises nine taught modules: seven compulsory and two elective to suit your needs and career aspirations. You will also complete a project on a chosen subject.

    During your course you will make visits to international maritime organisations and port facilities.

    You will take exams twice a year and to gain a pass you must achieve 50% in each of the coursework and exam elements.

    Where applicable, tuition fees for City's programmes will be subject to inflationary increases in each year of study. Our policy for these increases is set out in our terms and conditions of study.

    Funding

    Scholarships worth £2,000 are offered to outstanding postgraduate students, who are applying for a course in Computer Science or Engineering. You do not need to make a separate application. You will be automatically considered based on your master’s programme application form with your personal statement, and your supporting documents.

    • UK

      For those already working in the industry, we require a first degree, recognised professional qualification or the equivalent Certificate of Competence as Master or Chief Engineer: Class 1 Master Mariner or Class 1 Engineer and experience in one of these roles.

      For those coming straight from an undergraduate course, we require a lower second-class honours degree (or higher) in a relevant subject from a recognised institution.

      Other suitable qualifications

      If you do not qualify for direct entry, you may wish to follow a Graduate Diploma pathway to the programme through one of our partners.

    • Zimbabwe
