About
Overview
I am Professor of Information Science in the Department of Library and Information Science (CityLIS) at City University London. I am involved in research and teaching in three areas of library/information science: the foundations of the information sciences, including conceptions of information in different domains, and theory building and research methodology in the library/information disciplines: information resources and documents, their nature, use and organisation, historical development, and new forms; and information behaviour, particularly those aspects associated with individual differences, with creativity and innovation, and with digital literacies - more details here, with a link to my current and past PhD students here.
I teach mainly on our Masters courses in Information Science and in Library Science, where I lead and contribute to modules including Library and Information Science Foundation, Information Organisation, Research Methods and Communication, Information Resources and Documentation, Information and Data Law and Ethics, Independent Study, and the LIS dissertation project. I am also an Honorary Lecturer and PhD supervisor at University College London and at the University of Ljubljana.
I am editor of Journal of Documentation, and co-author of Facet's best-selling textbook Introduction to Information Science.
I am a former panel member for D:36 in REF2014 and D:34 in REF2021, a member of the AHRC and ESRC peer review collages, and a project evaluator for the Slovenian National Research Agency and for the Leverhulme Foundation.
My blog is The Occasional Informationist, with more about me here, and I am on Twitter as @david_bawden.
I have a BSc in organic chemistry from Liverpool University, and MSc and PhD in information science from Sheffield University. Before joining City, I worked in pharmaceutical research information services at Pfizer Central Research. More about my past life can be found here.
Research
Overview
Within City's Centre for Information Science, my main research interests are: concepts and theories of information, particularly relations between the concepts of information in different domains; information history; aspects of information behaviour, particularly those involving browsing, creativity and innovation; individual differences in information behaviour and practices; digital literacy; information in specific subject domains. For more details please look here.
My preferred research style is mixed-methods, and I have a particular interest in qualitative syntheses for gaining understanding: see my article On the gaining of understanding; syntheses, themes and information analysis .
I also have a strong interest in the link between theory and practice in the information sciences, stemming from my experience as a practitioner for twelve years in research information services in the pharmaceutical industry.
Most of my work is individual scholarship, together with supervision of research students and masters dissertation students. An up-to-date list of my current and completed PhD students can be found here , and a selective list of MSc dissertations here .
