About
Overview
Dr Edwin Abdurakman completed his PhD in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) at the Nottingham Trent University. His novel research work focused on developing and testing microbubble-based contrast agents to measure pressure variations in the human stomach with MRI. He presented his research in various MRI conferences, nationally and internationally. He joined City as a lecturer in Diagnostic Radiography in March 2018. While at City, he had taken on various internal and external roles including admissions tutor for radiography, programme director for BSc (Hons) Radiography (Diagnostic Imaging) in the School of Health Sciences, visiting scholar (researcher in MRI) at Nottingham Trent University and reviewer (reading committee) for Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships under the Association of Commonwealth Universities. In November 2021, he was appointed as a senior lecturer at De Montfort University Leicester, but he still contributes to teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate radiography programmes at City in his capacity as a visiting lecturer.
Prior to this, Edwin was trained as a radiographer and qualified in 2006 with BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Imaging & Radiotherapy from the National University of Malaysia. He then worked as a diagnostic radiographer in Malaysia for a number of years before becoming a lecturer in medical imaging at the Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College and later on the University of Selangor, Malaysia. After awarded with a masters degree in 2013, he took a further step in his academic accomplishment by pursuing a PhD the following year which then brought him to the UK.

Research
Past and Current Research
Edwin's research aims to use microbubbles as a pressure probe for MRI gastrointestinal application, which will be useful as a diagnostic tool in diagnosing patient with functional dyspepsia condition. He works collaboratively with the Nottingham Trent University (NTU) and the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre, University of Nottingham. After completion of his PhD, Edwin has been appointed as a visiting researcher at NTU, on top of his role at City, continuing his work in the development of microbubble-based MRI contrast agents.
He also supervises MSc and BSc research projects in various topics on medical imaging.
