Midwifery MSc / Postgrad Diploma
Overview
This course enables you to deepen your understanding of the context of childbirth and current issues in midwifery practice. There is an emphasis on exploration of theory, research, research appraisal and critical use of evidence to question and inform practice. It supports the development, evaluation and implementation of evidence-based practice and policy.
It enables and encourages critical thinking, the application of advanced skills, information and knowledge management for the promotion of health and wellbeing of childbearing women and their families.
Who is the course for?
You should be a qualified midwife with a minimum of one year's experience.

Entry Requirements
- Preferably a relevant upper second class honours degree or equivalent
- You may be considered if you do not hold a relevant fi rst degree, but will be required to: - Successfully complete a research module at level three, prior to commencing Masters level study. (Up to 30 level three credits may be used towards accumulation of credits for the Masters award).
- Write an admission essay
- Present a portfolio of evidence which reflects capability at L3/M level.

Visa Requirements
The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course at City, there are different rules for:
- Students on courses of more than 6 months
- Students on courses of less than 6 months
- Students on a pre-sessional English Language course

When and Where
- Start Date:
- Two intakes each year – September and January
- Duration:
- Full time: one year, plus the dissertation can take up to one further year to complete. Part time: up to fi ve years – the length of the course will depend on the number of modules you select each term
Course Content
The course gives students an understanding of the multi-professionalism of maternity care, and encourages learning alongside other professional groups.
A wide range of modules offers you flexibility where you can select a combination of modules to meet your development needs and specialise in areas of interest. You may also study individual modules within the course for CPD.
Course Structure
The range of modules offers great flexibility, so you can also select combinations of modules geared towards specialised areas of interest such as management or public health. You may be able to select further modules from our CPD portfolio.

When you have successfully completed the modules plus a dissertation you will qualify for a full Masters degree and be awarded an MSc in Midwifery. If you complete the modules without the dissertation you will be eligible for a postgraduate diploma in Midwifery.
Teaching and Assessment
Teaching and learning strategies includes lecture sessions, workshops, self directed learning, small group activities as well as discussions and debates.
Modules are assessed through a combination of group work, written coursework and OSCE examination. All assessments must be focused on issues in midwifery practice, management, research or education.

Placements
A work placement is not required for the MSc Midwifery. If you choose clinical modules you must be registered with the NMC and be working clinically within a healthcare setting.Career Prospects
The course will increase the depth and breadth of your knowledge of midwifery practice and policy and consolidate such skills as critical appraisal, strategic planning and evaluation. It will provide you with a foundation for undertaking posts that involve staff leadership, practice development and policy formulation. In addition, it sets the basis for further development at Doctorate/PhD level.
