Structure

Master of Arts (MA)

Duration:

  • Full-time: 12 months
  • Part-time: 24 months

Modules:

  • Core modules: 5
  • Optional modules: 5
  • Modules

The MA is structured around a spine of five core modules taking place in the autumn and spring terms.

The MA culminates in a 13,000 - 15,000-word Dissertation (running through the spring and summer terms), which students complete by the end of August.

    Core modules

    • Culture (15 credits)

This module explores ideas of what culture is, and the intellectual foundations of the study of culture, and it’s institutionalisation in academe; plus a range of important strands of the development of contemporary thought in relation to culture, economy and society.

    • Cultural Policy (15 credits)

This module introduces the core debates around cultural policy. It outlines the emergence of cultural policy as a field of study and its relationship to a variety of academic areas, including political science, arts management and cultural studies.

    • Managing Organisations (15 credits)

The module develops general competencies and skills required by managers operating in the creative sector. It aims to equip you with the knowledge and understanding required to operate effectively in a managerial role in cultural sector organisations and examines key aspects of these organisations.

    • Introduction to Research (15 credits)

This module will equip you with a range of methodologies with which to carry out research and reflect on your own and others' practice. It will enable you to critique the claims made for the work of culture, and to design robust and effective research strategies

    Elective modules

    • Audiences and Marketing (15 credits)

This module introduces you to the knowledge and skills needed to understand marketing in cultural organisations. It explores the factors that influence cultural consumption in its diverse forms and examines how cultural and creative organisations market themselves effectively.

    • Public Culture: diversity, equality and activism in the cultural sector (15 credits)

This module analyses challenges to inequality and elitism made through a range of actions in the cultural sector such as direct protest, activist interventions and alternative cultural constructions. We will examine overt and covert challenges on the basis of environmentalism, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality and dis/ability.

    • Fundraising in and for the Cultural Sector (15 credits)

This module will examine the impact of philanthropy and consider the full range of revenue sources available, and explore effective approaches to making the case for support in different funding contexts.
