Course overview

Benefits of this course

We help you develop new and existing skills, significantly enhance your knowledge of economics and prepare you for work as a professional economist.

By the time you graduate, your sharpened critical and analytical abilities will function alongside a full understanding of modern economic theory.

You will be confident in the application of econometric theory and techniques, and in your ability to critically analyse modern research.

The dissertation track is also a good pathway to an Economics PhD if you want to pursue further study.

Award

You can select to apply for one of the available exit points for this course.

  • Master of Science (MSc)

Who is this course for?

This course is ideal if you want to thoroughly immerse yourself in modern economics training, either straight after an undergraduate degree or as a mid-career professional.

You have the flexibility to study full time over one year or part time over two years.

Master of Science (MSc)

Duration:

  • Full-time: 1 year
  • Part-time: 2 years

Modules:

Some modules may be subject to change depending on student numbers, tutor availability, or course updates. This may affect the overall number of modules.

Modules

You will take 120 credits of taught core modules and 60 extra credits through one of the following routes:

  • Literature Survey: select two extra elective taught modules of 15 credits each and a literature review (Economics Literature Survey) worth 30 credits.
  • Dissertation: a 60-credit Economics Research Project.

In the dissertation route, you will take four core modules and two elective modules.

In the literature survey path, you will take three core modules and five elective modules.

It is not possible to give exact hours per week as these can vary from one term to the other, depending on which electives you choose.

If you are doing the Dissertation path, the 120 credits taught modules come from:

  • Two core 30-credit modules (Microeconomic Theory and Econometrics)

  • Three electives.

If you are doing the Literature Survey path, the 150 credits taught modules come from:

  • Two core 30-credit modules, EITHER Business Economics OR Microeconomic Theory and EITHER Quantitative Methods OR Econometrics
  • One core 15-credit module (International Macroeconomics)
  • Five electives.

Business Economics is not a core module if you are doing the dissertation.

Core modules

  • Business Economics (30 credits)

This module is underpinned by core microeconomics and provides a basis in business economics and the application of economic theories and tools to real-world business problems and policy issues.

  • Microeconomic Theory (30 credits)

This module focuses on advanced microeconomic theory. The topics covered include classical theory of the consumer, the theory of the firm, the basics of market equilibrium, game theory, contract theory and the problems of moral hazard and adverse selection.

  • Quantitative Methods (30 credits)

The module is designed to provide the necessary foundation in the essential statistical and quantitative techniques for the study of business economics. You will also be made familiar with appropriate statistical software that can be used for economics analysis.

  • Econometrics (30 credits)

This module is designed to provide you with a grasp of advanced level applied econometrics and econometric theory.

  • International Macroeconomics (15 credits)
