The Office for Students (OfS) has launched a consultation on the change of City, University of London’s name to ‘City St George’s, University of London’, upon completion of the merger with St George’s, University of London this summer.

The merger agreement was signed in February 2024, with the combined institution set to become one of the largest suppliers of the health workforce in the capital and among the largest higher education destinations for London students.

The proposed new name will reflect the history and legacy of City and St George’s, while conveying a strong single identity.

The OfS would like to hear from City students and their representatives, and well as other universities, colleges, and stakeholders on the proposed new name. This consultation will invite views on whether the proposed new name is, or has the potential to be, confusing or misleading.

The deadline to respond to the consultation is midday on Friday 24 May 2024.

Professor Sir Anthony Finkelstein, President, City, University of London said:

"City, University of London and St George’s, University of London will merge on Thursday 1 August 2024. In doing so, we will create one single, combined institution which will span from North to South London and is projected to educate more than 26,000 students.

The proposed name, City St George’s, University of London, has been chosen to reflect the proud and long histories and positives of our two legacy institutions, and the mutually beneficial and exciting opportunity the merger offers.

Feedback on the name has been gathered from internal and external stakeholder groups, including staff, current students and alumni at each institution, plus prospective applicants. This feedback has reflected the importance of retaining both names while signalling partnership.
