Important Update: Due to industrial action, the event will take place on Wednesday 22nd of June 2022.
Speaker: Dr. Katrina Dulay, City , University of London
Age-of-acquisition (AoA) norms are normally gathered across different languages in aid of psycholinguistic research on lexical processing and word recognition.
Importantly, AoA ratings also provide a window to child language acquisition and could serve as a variable that facilitates the development of well-controlled child assessments and intervention materials.
Whilst such resources have been developed in well-studied languages such as English, such resources are elusive in understudied languages such as Kannada and Filipino.
In this talk, Dr. Dulay will describe the development process of new age-of-acquisition word lists in two Asian languages from corpus creation to word selection, the analysis of participant-level and word-level variables that introduce variations in attained AoA ratings, and potential avenues for further research in Kannada and Filipino language learning.
The talk lays out potentially underexplored components of age-of-acquisition studies in general and the linguistic and methodological challenges of designing such psycholinguistic resources from the ground up.
