    Who is this course for?

    If you want to develop your career in the fast-growing aviation industry this course is perfect.

    You'll need to have been employed within the aircraft maintenance industry for at least two years and want to develop your career in the fast-growing aviation industry.

    Current students include engineers and maintenance staff with the majority having a license/professional education. We also welcome students with a military background and the course is compatible with The MoD's Enhanced Learning Credits Administration Service (ELCAS).

    In rare cases, some elective modules may not run due to low interest or unanticipated changes in timetabling, including scheduling clashes, room and staff availability.

    • Induction Workshop (0 credits)

      This 3 day workshop will introduce you to the MSc Aviation Programmes, modules, grading, degrees, and organisational material. Networking and group-building with others on the course is encouraged

    • Airline Operational Regulatory Compliance (15 credits)

      In this module, you will gain an understanding about how leadership and management of regulatory compliance is the key to normal operations and maintenance of company reputation and market share. You will also learn the formal Quality Systems for Airline operations.

    • Airworthiness (15 credits)

      In this module you will study the role of airworthiness in an airline, charter, freight, corporate operation, or stand lone maintenance facility. A focus is placed on regulatory requirements, development of Vision and Mission, stakeholder management and how airworthiness creates safety.

    • Airline Maintenance (15 credits)

      The module establishes the foundation for your understanding on how maintenance is managed from a strategic point of view. You will learn the framework within which aircraft maintenance takes place, and explore how engineering management must drive safety, efficiency and performance.

    • Airline Operations (15 credits)

      This module is geared towards current and future aviation professionals intending to carry out Operational Management duties. You will learn the background of airline operations, including regulations, airports, and maintenance organisations.

    • Airline Commercial Management (15 credits)

      This module will enable you to analyze and design robust commercial strategies and processes that strive to create value for its customers and key stakeholders. You will also learn to synthesise successful commercial strategies and techniques which can help build more profitable relationships with customers and a sustainable business proposition.

    • Human Resource Management (15 credits)

      In this module you will learn about leadership and management of people, and explore why it is essential for all who are responsible for organisational success. You will investigate areas such as recruitment and selection, performance management, employee engagement and change management.

    • Air Transport Economics (15 credits)

      In this module you will gain an understanding that leadership and management of the industry economics and resources is essential for a successful company reputation and market presence. You will study economic principles as they relate to different airline business models.

    • Airline Finance (15 credits)

      This module offers an introduction to airline finance as a medium, used by organisations, in communicating with shareholders, lenders, and governments. You will explore areas such as preparation of income statements, valuations of assets, and financial reporting.

    • Crisis Management (15 credits)

      In this module you will develop an understanding of how leadership and management of people and resources is essential for a successful return from a crisis to normal operations and maintenance of company reputation and market share.

    • Airline Fleet Planning (15 credits)

      In this module you will learn about the techniques involved in fleet planning, including how it supports business strategy and explore fleet planning processes within the context of different business modules. You will also learn about market and network analysis and investment appraisal.

    • Active Safety Management (15 credits)

      In this module, you will explore how leadership and management of people and resources is essential for a successful safety management. You will learn about managing risk and striving for aviation safety performance through a practical, integrated and effective Safety Management System.

    • Psychology in Aviation Management (15 credits)

      This module presents the basics of psychology in aviation management in a structured and interactive way. You will learn about passenger behaviour and fear of flying, psychological stressors within the aviation environment, crew mental health issues, and trauma effect following an accident.

    • Airline Strategy and Business Planning (15 credits)

      In this module you will learn the two essential elements for the successful development of any airline: a solid strategy and a robust business plan. You will critically evaluate concepts including business modelling, stakeholder engagement, and risk factors.

    • Air Accident Investigation (15 credits)

      In this module you will learn accident and incident investigation procedures and you will gain sufficient tools to understand and assist in an investigation. You will discuss the reasons to start an investigation and learn how to prepare one on or off site.

    • Leadership in Organisations (15 credits)

      This module will introduce you to the basics of leadership in organisations in a structured and interactive way. You will analyse leadership models, explore issues relating to leadership behaviours and understand the impact of national culture and gender on leadership.

    • Safety Risk Management (15 credits)

      The module will teach you the fundamentals of Safety Risk Management and provide you with sufficient tools and knowledge to understand and conduct Risk Management.

    • General Principles in Human Factors (15 credits)

      This module explores how we are influenced by, and interact with one another, systems and our environment. In this module you will learn how the application of human factors is critical to preventing incidents and accidents both in our industry and in our home lives.

    • Sustainable Aviation (15 credits)

      In this module you will learn some of the key challenges around long-term sustainability of air transport. This includes exploring what air transport drives growth, the global context in terms of climate change legislation and how air transport can meet environmental objectives.

    • Aviation Law (15 credits)

      In this module, you will study how aviation is regulated at domestic, EU and international levels. You will explore areas of public and private international law, economic theories regulation, competition rules and antitrust law, safety and security, and environmental regulation.

    • Future Aviation Challenges – from Unmanned to Spaceflight Vehicles (15 credits)

      In this module you will explore the fundamental principles of emerging aviation and aerospace topics. This will include understanding the importance of proper pilot skills and spaceflight participants’ preparation; maintenance, air & space management, spaceports, airworthy design of space planes, satellites and UAS.

    • Airport Strategic Management (15 credits)

      In this module you will explore the airport’s role in society, its economic and political effects, how ownership can influence the management of an airport, regulatory requirements, development of Vision and Mission, stakeholder management and how airports create revenues.

    • Airline Training Management (15 credits)

      In this module you will discuss how to manage the need for ‘Airline Training’, expand your academic knowledge base of airline operations employees in order to enhance the company’s competitiveness and financial performance in the area of training, and understand airline training economics.

    • Business Aviation (15 credits)

      This module aims to give the student an understanding of the unique operating environment of business aircraft and is essential for those who are involved in this niche sector of aviation

    Dissertation

    • Project (60 credits)

      In this module you will be required to complete and pass a project. This will entail writing on an original and relevant topic and defending it against informed interrogation. It should be based in part on the background provided by the taught modules.

    Teaching and assessment

    Throughout your course you will learn from academic staff with extensive industry experience, alongside specialist lecturers from the aviation sector.

    You will work in small teams to examine the relevant issues in each module designed to develop a specific skill. You will also have access to online assessment and communication tools to interact with lecturers and other students. A dissertation related to experience in the industry is required.

    State-of-the-art facilities on site include a flight desk and flight test simulator, an A320 cockpit procedure trainer, wind tunnels and micro turbines, as well as optical compressors and fuel injection systems.

    Teaching takes place across global locations including London, Dubai and Frankfurt. Each module, including the Induction Workshop, is taught over a three day period.

    This programme will give you a recognised industry qualification, control of your own career and the ability to contribute to aircraft maintenance.

      Applicants must be employed in the aviation industry for at least two years to be considered for this programme. You will normally require a professional licence, for example an Air Transport Pilot's Licence, Aircraft Engineer Licence, Air Traffic Controller Licence or similar. However, applicants with Bachelor’s degrees in an aviation related subject (aeronautical engineering, aviation management or similar) will also be considered.

      The mandatory Induction Workshop to our MSc programmes must be passed and will assess the English capability and writing skills required for the MSc programme. Students must successfully pass the Induction Workshop before commencing with the MSc programme. The Induction Workshop is a short course offered every three months, which means you can apply to the MSc Aircraft Maintenance Management at any point during the year.

    English language requirements

    The mandatory Induction Workshop to our MSc programmes must be passed and will assess the English capability and writing skills required for the MSc programme.

    Your English should be proficient as is required in the aviation industry.

    Application process

    Before commencing the MSc course, applicants must have completed a mandatory Induction Workshop which is held four times a year.

    All Induction Workshop dates for this academic year have now passed.
