Spotify and City, University of London have today announced applications are open for a new bursary to join the UK's first dedicated MA in Podcasting. As part of the partnership, Spotify has provided funding for a student from an underrepresented community to attend the course in its second year, starting September 2024.

The bursary has been established with the goal of tackling ongoing issues of socioeconomic diversity within media and journalism, with a recent report by the National Council for the Training of Journalists highlighting that the proportion of journalists originating from the highest social classes not only persists, but has widened further in the past few years (from 75% in 2020 to 80% in 2021).

Brett Spencer, Senior Lecturer in Podcasting at City, says:

For many young people, a world class education is a passport to a future that would otherwise be beyond reach. By partnering with Spotify, we can provide an opportunity to new talent to study in sector-leading facilities and remove one of the barriers that can hold people back from realising their full potential.

The bursary will cover the full tuition fees and living expenses for one student for the entirety of the one year course.

The course has been designed to form a future alumni community of podcasters who can extend their learnings beyond the classrooms and build a lifelong support network within the industry. The course runs alongside a new Centre of Podcasting Excellence at City that holds monthly events, welcomes guest speakers and hosts journalists in residence. In year one alone, the MA in Podcasting has seen students gain experience with leaders in the podcasting space such as Goalhanger, Persephonica and Crowd Network.
