The theme of this year’s magazine is ‘community’. Professor Sir Anthony Finkelstein, reflecting on the term and its connotations, said:

Community is a word that means different things to different people, but whatever it means to you, we can agree on how important it is. City is a ‘civic university’ with deep roots in the City of London and in its creative fringe – Clerkenwell, Finsbury, Shoreditch. We are proud of our place in Islington and the positive impact that our work has on that community.

In 1894, City’s predecessor, the Northampton Institute, was founded on the basis of enhancing the industrial skills, general knowledge, health and wellbeing of the members of its local community.

Over 125 years on, City remains firmly rooted in its mission to support its community whether students, staff, alumni, partners and neighbours.

The past year has been challenging, particularly around the cost of living, which City has risen to through providing bursaries to struggling students, subsidised dinners on campus and free legal advice to local residents.
