City, University of London’s Professor Eduardo Alonso took part in a Roundtable on Foundation Models (FMs) in the Public Sector, organised by the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology.

733328Foundation models are AI neural networks trained on massive unlabelled datasets to handle a wide variety of jobs from translating text to analyzing medical images.

The discussion centred on the feasibility, scalability and potential impact of a range of applications for FMs in public services, including healthcare, policy making, and education.

The proceedings of the Roundtable will inform the development and evaluation of potential use cases to be recommended to the Foundation Model Taskforce, a government initiative to accelerate the development of safe and reliable FMs within the UK and enhance the AI capabilities of public services.
