The City Law School’s Dr Marc Mimler and Dr Enrico Bonadio contributed to Meiji University’s workshop on ‘Video Games, Fan Culture, and Intellectual Property’, held from May 29th to June 2nd and organised by Professor Tetsuya Imamura.

While in the land of the rising sun, the City academics discussed and analysed the treatment of fan activities in relation to videogames in Japan.

According to Dr Mimler, “we were provided with an opportunity to discuss and analyse the treatment of fan activities in relation to videogames in Japan with Professor Yoshiyuki Tamura, Professor Tatsuhiro Ueno, Professor Christoph Rademacher and Professor Kazuhiro Ando. We got very useful insights on the practice of video game publishers by Jun Terahara from Sega Sammy Holdings.”

“The following day, we had the chance to pick the brain of Takashi Nakazaki on this issue in the amazing offices of Anderson Mori & Tatsune in Tokyo. And it was great to finally meet Rossana Ducato.”

The findings and proceedings of the Japan workshop will be used in a chapter authored by Tetsuya Imamura, Dr Bonadio and Dr Mimler, and will be incorporated into the upcoming Research Handbook on Interactive Entertainment Law published by EdwardElgarPub Ltd co-edited by Dr Michaela MacDonald, Dr Yin Harn Lee, Gaetano Dimita and Jon Festinger and Dr Mimler.

The Daiwa Anglo Japanese Foundation facilitated travel to Japan from the UK for Dr Mimler and Dr Bonadio.
