Chaired by Professor Lis Howell (Emerita) and Professor Suzanne Franks.
This exciting conference presents new figures, which will show whether expert women are still under-represented on the news, compared to expert men. We have surveyed six flagship news programmes. At our first conference in 2014, we showed that five times as many male experts as female experts appeared on top TV news programmes.
Our campaign improved things. But are we now going backwards? The new figures will tell us….
And for our fourth conference we are delighted to partner with the Academy of Medical Sciences to present new statistics on the presentation of women and the patient experience on air.
We also welcome our first international partners from the Ghana Women Experts Project.
Confirmed speakers include:
Anneliese Dodds MP, Shadow Minister for Women
Editors of the surveyed programmes: Jessica Benton (BBC News at Ten); Owenna Griffith (BBC Radio 4 “Today”); Debbie Ramsey (Channel 5 News); Laura Scott (Sky News); Laura Wilshaw (Channel 4 News).
Vikki Cooke, Director of Broadcast and Media, Ofcom
Jonathan Munro, BBC Director of Journalism
Ade Rawcliffe, ITV Director of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion
Cathy Newman, Channel 4 News
Jill Rutter, Senior Research Fellow of UK in a Changing Europe; previously Programme Director, Institute for Government – How to be an Expert and what are the perils?

And a special session – Case study or expert? We ask what the research tells us about the different ways patients and their lived experiences contribute to news stories. With Rosamund Adoo-Kissi-Debrah (Ella Roberta Foundation) whose daughter Ella’s death in 2013 was the first to be attributed to excessive air pollution, and Lynn Laidlaw, Co-Investigator COVID Shielding Voices. Plus medical journalists.
