The Centre for Mental Health Research at the School of Health and Psychological Science, City, University of London welcomes Professor Stefan Priebe to discuss his findings on how mental health and mental distress can be understood as phenomena in social interactions, as part of the research seminar series.
Abstract
The presentation will describe how mental health and mental distress can be understood as phenomena in social interactions.
It will then outline a few implications of such a social paradigm for improving mental health, focusing on actions using existing community resources.
About the speaker
Stefan Priebe graduated in Psychology and Medicine at the University of Hamburg, and qualified as Neurologist, Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist in Berlin.
He was Head of the Department of Social Psychiatry at the Free University Berlin, until in 1997 he moved to London and was Professor for Social and Community Psychiatry at Queen Mary, University of London.
He retired in 2023 and is now Honorary Visiting Professor at City, University of London. He holds further visiting professorships at universities in Buenos Aires and Vienna.
