This event is part of ‘Black Futures Month’ and aimed at Black students and staff.
Abstract
Immerse yourself in the world of movement with Darcy Dixon, an actor, mentor, and highly trained movement practitioner. This unique workshop offers a safe and welcoming space for individuals of all experience levels to come together and explore the power of movement.
In this workshop, Darcy will guide City students, staff and all through a series of movement exercises and techniques, allowing them to tap into their inner creativity and express themselves through their bodies.
Whether you are a seasoned dancer or hate the idea of dancing in front of others, this workshop is designed to nurture and encourage your individuality and personal growth.
Dance is not only a beautiful form of artistic expression, but it also holds great importance in our overall well-being. Through dance, we have the opportunity to connect with our bodies in a deep and meaningful way. Dance movement therapy, for example, uses movement to promote emotional, cognitive, and physical integration and healing.
When we engage in dance, we tap into our somatic awareness, allowing us to fully connect with our bodies and explore our emotions and experiences. This somatic connection can be incredibly powerful, providing a space for self-expression, release, and personal growth.
Dance also offers a unique avenue for communication and connection with others. It transcends language barriers and allows us to communicate and interact on a non-verbal level. Through dance, we can build relationships, foster empathy, and create a sense of community.
Furthermore, dance is an integral part of Black cultural heritage. It serves as a powerful medium through which we can celebrate our traditions, preserve our history, and honour the legacies of our ancestors.
From traditional African dances to contemporary forms influenced by the African diaspora, dance embodies our collective story and serves as a testament to our strength, creativity, and cultural richness.
