The City Law School is delighted to host its inaugural networking evening in Kuala Lumpur, to celebrate and strengthen its links with the Malaysian legal profession, and continuing to promote City, University of London’s reputation as “the University for business, practice and professions”. We are excited to offer to our City Alumni network this unique and exclusive opportunity to meet judges, law firms, and other legal practitioners and commentators with the aim of bringing London closer to Kuala Lumpur.
A panel discussion will take place, featuring Justice Dr Shahnaz binti Sulaiman (PhD Law, 2015), High Court Judge of Shah Alam, Malaysia, as moderator and Professor Mark O’Brien (Academic Dean of The City Law School, City, University of London, UK) alongside The Right Honourable Justice Dato’ Sri Hasnah binti Dato’ Mohamed Hashim, Federal Court Judge of Malaysia.

Justice Dato’ Sri Hasnah binti Dato’ Mohamed Hashim
Justice Dato’ Sri Hasnah binti Dato’ Mohamed Hashim is a Federal Court Judge of Malaysia. Her Ladyship is an esteemed member Judge of the Inns of Court Malaysia (ICM).
Justice Dato’ Sri Hasnah was appointed as Judicial Commissioner in 2010 before being elevated as a High Court Judge in April 2012, serving in the Kuala Lumpur High Court. In March 2016, Her Ladyship was elevated to the Court of Appeal as a Judge before being elevated to the Federal Court in December 2019.
Professor Mark O’Brien
Professor Mark O'Brien is Professor of Law and Society and the Academic Dean of The City Law School, having joined City in 2020. Previously he was Head of the School of Law at Oxford Brookes University, and Director of Law at the University of the West of England, Bristol.
A graduate of Exeter and Reading Universities, Professor O’Brien has also previously held appointments at Reading and Sheffield Hallam Universities.
A Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Professor O’Brien’s current teaching interests relate to Public Law, and his research interests revolve around information technology law, civil liberties and criminal justice, especially regarding the regulation of the Internet, and also counter-cultural groups, public order law and police discretion, in all of which areas he has published extensively.
Justice Dr Shahnaz Binti Sulaiman
Justice Dr Shahnaz Sulaiman was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner on 3 May 2019. On 27 April 2022, Her Ladyship was appointed a Judge of the High Court of Malaya. Prior to Her Ladyship’s appointment to the bench, Her Ladyship was an Associate Director at the Malaysian Aviation Commission. Her Ladyship was seconded to the Malaysian Aviation Commission from the Attorney General’s Chambers where Her Ladyship had served for 22 years. Her Ladyship had also served at the Ministry of Works, the Ministry of Health and the Department of Civil Aviation, Malaysia.
Her Ladyship was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1996. She is an associate member of the Royal Aeronautical Society, member of the Commonwealth Association of Legislative Counsel, committee member of the Editorial Committee of the Journal of the Malaysian Judiciary and the President of the Competition Appeals Tribunal. She is also an Ordinary Committee Member of the Inns of Court Malaysia (ICM).
Her Ladyship Dr Sulaiman is a graduate from University Teknologi MARA or UITM. She obtained her LLM from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London under a British Chevening Scholarship. Her Ladyship acquired her PhD from City Law School.
