Dr Charlie Taverner (Trinity College Dublin) is a historian of food and cities. As part of a special event on Monday 30 October, he will be facilitating a guided walking session through the vicinity of City, University of London’s Northampton Square campus. During this interactive experience, participants will have the opportunity to halt periodically and engage in conversation, exploring a variety of locations that reveal the profound interconnection between London's historical culinary practices and its geographical landscape. Moreover, the excursion aims to shed light on how the legacy of food history continues to reverberate in present times. Charlie will be joined by researchers from City’s Centre for Food Policy as well as Dr Samuel Rigby, Public Health Consultant and Acting Assistant Director for Public Health in Islington.
The tour will include the following locations: New River Head; Exmouth Market; Church of St James Clerkenwell; Old Sessions House, Clerkenwell Green; Cannon Brewery, St John Street.

About the academics
Dr Charlie Taverner is a historian of food and cities, especially London. He is the author of Street Food: Hawkers and the History of London (OUP, 2023). He is currently a research fellow at Trinity College Dublin as part of the ERC funded FoodCult project, exploring the history of food in early modern Ireland using history, archaeology and new scientific methods. Prior to entering academia, Charlie was employed as a business and agriculture journalist at the magazine Farmers Weekly. While he now lives in north London, he was brought up on his family’s dairy farm in Devon.
Dr Samuel Rigby is a Public Health Consultant and Acting Assistant Director for Public Health at Islington Council, covering health protection, healthy weight and physical activity portfolios.
