Gamelan Sekar Enggal is the UK's foremost ensemble for the Sundanese music of West Java, and has been resident at City, University of London since 1990. This concert includes a variety of traditional and modern gamelan degung (gong chime ensemble) and kacapi suling (flute and zither) repertoire.
In addition, the group will feature special guest Byron Wallen, the highly acclaimed trumpet player, in two pieces by the pioneer of Ethiojazz, vibraphonist Mulatu Astatke. This fusion of traditions is made possible by the happy accident that the Ethiopian ambassel scale corresponds closely to the sorog pentatonic scale used in gamelan degung.
This event is free to attend, but seats are limited, so please do sign up to attend, via the 'register now' button above.

Sekar Enggal was founded by Simon Cook in 1986. He started playing gamelan in the Netherlands in 1979, and later lived in Indonesia for 12 years, specialising in the study of Sundanese music.
Byron Wallen is one of the UK's foremost jazz trumpeters, with a special interest in world music. He directs his own Gayan Gamelan Ensemble, and has performed frequently with the legendary Mulatu Astatke.
