Speakers: Carole Sanchez (Centre for Longitudinal Studies), Mari Toomse-Smith and Kirsty Cole (NatCen Social Research)
During the pandemic many surveys were forced to switch from face-to-face data collection to remote methods.
A new approach which emerged during this time was video interviewing.
In this presentation, Carole Sanchez (Centre for Longitudinal Studies), Mari Toomse-Smith and Kirsty Cole (NatCen Social Research) will discuss the use of this innovative new approach.
This applies to the use of video interviewing in both longitudinal surveys (the 1958 National Child Development Study (NCDS), the 1970 British Cohort Study (BCS70) and English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA)) and cross-sectional surveys (European Social Survey (ESS) and the Health Survey for England (HSE)).
The speakers will outline some of the lessons learned so far and consider whether this approach has a future as we emerge from the pandemic.
About the speakers:
Carole Sanchez is a Survey Manager at the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS) and is responsible for the project management of two of their national longitudinal cohort studies - the 1958 National Child Development Study (NCDS) and the 1970 British Cohort Study (BCS70). These world renowned studies have followed the lives of individuals since they were born, providing unique evidence on how people develop from infancy, throughout childhood and adult life.
Mari Toomse-Smith is the Director of Health and Biomedical Surveys at the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen). Mari oversees NatCen’s health surveys portfolio, including the Health Survey for England, and leads a large team of researchers. Her expertise lies in survey methodology, particularly in the health domain.
Kirsty Cole is a Research Director in the Longitudinal Surveys Team at NatCen. She works on BCS70 and has been particularly involved in the development of the video calling approach that is now being used on some of our longitudinal studies.
