Who is it for?

Students who have also studied art or design are particularly suited to this innovative course. The Clerkenwell location provides a vibrant and relevant environment for structural engineers to collaborate with leading architects and other designers.

Objectives

This new degree is the first of its kind to be offered in London. It responds to the demand for motivated, creative individuals who wish to take full advantage of their interest in science and mathematics to arrive at elegant designs that link optimisation with a beauty of architectural form.

Our approach rewards critical thinking and curiosity. Students are shown how to arrive at efficient solutions where the structure can withstand the stresses and displacements resulting from all plausible static and dynamic loads (be they gravitational, seismic, wind, thermal or impact).

Requirements and how to apply

Entry requirements

  • 'A' Level: AAA (including Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry or Biology).
  • Tariff: 144 UCAS tariff points (including Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry or Biology). Read more about the new UCAS tariff from September 2017.
  • BTEC: BTEC is not considered.
  • IB: 35 points (including Higher Level Mathematics and Physics at grade 6).

The following is also required:

  • GCSE: A minimum of grade 4 (C) in GCSE English.

Other suitable qualifications

  • Extended Project Qualification (EPQ): We welcome applications that include the EPQ. Where relevant, this may be included in our offer, resulting in an ‘A’ Level offer reduced by one grade.

If you do not qualify for direct entry, you may wish to take a foundation programme first. These programmes are designed to prepare students for entry to City's undergraduate courses.

English requirements

If your first language is not English, we will require evidence of English language proficiency. Minimum requirements are:

  • IELTS: 6.0 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each component.
  • PTE Academic: 58 overall with a minimum of 50 in each component.

Visa requirements

Placements

The School has its own dedicated placements team that provides on-hand placement and internship support and guidance for students throughout their studies.

Our team of placement specialists, the Professional Liaison Unit, has extensive experience in helping students to secure professional experience across a range of industries. The team also has longstanding relationships with an impressive and diverse range of companies spanning both large and small organisations

MEng students are strongly encouraged to follow a 12-month industrial placement between the end of year three and start of their final year. Specialist advisors within the School are in regular contact with engineering firms to assist in finding suitable internships and placements. Students benefit from the advantage of studying in the vibrant Design Quarter of Clerkenwell, where numerous extracurricular professional activities occur (for example, at the nearby Institution of Structural Engineers). These offer excellent networking opportunities that can lead to exciting work experience placements.

Placements are a fantastic way to gain professional experience in a relevant field as part of your degree. Undertaking a placement year could also count towards the experience requirement for a professional engineering qualification.

Placements are highly encouraged at City; students that complete a placement year benefit from gaining professional experience working on real-life projects and are also more likely to; achieve higher grades, secure a graduate-level job and earn a higher salary.

We have an array of recently refurbished facilities, including exceptional laboratories.

The Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility is the centrepiece of the Civil Engineering Laboratory which also accommodates a large flexible laboratory space used for centrifuge model preparation, model testing at 1g, concrete testing and teaching.

Adjacent to this are concrete mixing and casting facilities, a temperature-controlled soil element testing laboratory and a concrete durability laboratory.

Teaching and learning

Learning involves a combination of theoretical, experimental and computational study with help to develop sketching and other engineering communication skills. Our approach is to encourage critical thinking and foster curiosity through both teamwork and independent study.

The material is delivered through lectures, tutorials, design exercises (often replicating a multi-disciplinary studio environment), field courses and laboratory classes.

Students are shown how to arrive at efficient solutions where the structure can withstand the stresses and displacements resulting from all plausible static and dynamic loads (be they gravitational, seismic, wind, thermal or impact). The process involves selecting appropriate materials, deciding upon suitable geometries, understanding the requirements for the foundations and considering the construction sequence, while always keeping in mind aesthetics, function and economics.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed using a variety of methods, depending on module choices:

  • Practice Assessment Document (PAD): used to demonstrate achievement of practice competencies and also to record the number of hours of practice experience
  • Written assignments, including essays: these may take the form of care studies in which you will be expected to relate your essay to a particular service user or as support another assessment such as a poster presentation
  • Written examinations: including short answer questions, multiple choice questions, calculations, scenario based
  • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCEs): practical skills assessments which enable you to demonstrate particular clinical, communication or teaching skills
  • Dissertation: this final project will enable you to choose a relevant topic of interest to you and demonstrate an in depth knowledge of this.

The balance of assessment by examination, practical examination and assessment by coursework will to some extent depend on the optional modules you choose. The approximate percentage of the course assessment, based on 2016/17 entry is as follows:

Assessment

Assessment is by both coursework and examinations. Grades obtained in each year count towards the final degree classification, with increasing weight given to the later years.

Modules

Our Clerkenwell location gives you access to many of the leading structural engineering consultants. They collaborate with us to support you during design exercises helping you to tackle real projects with constraints and challenges that would be encountered in practice. Feedback from practicing engineers helps you to develop your ability to apply technical knowledge in a creative way to open-ended problems.

Year 1

Year one is common to all of the engineering courses. Students study the science (largely physics) and mathematics that underpin engineering principles. Group exercises provide students with the opportunities to undertake preliminary engineering designs.
