Dr Joana Fonseca receives Royal Academy of Engineering funding
Dr Joana Fonseca has received seed funding for two out of six interdisciplinary projects awarded this year under the Royal Academy of Engineering’s (RAEng) Frontiers of Engineering for Development Disaster Resilience Scheme.
In the first project, Bolstering resilience to cross-border disasters, the Senior Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering will join a team of collaborators to “address urgent needs for preparedness and action against cross-border disasters, by developing an integrated Disaster Risk Reduction plan supported by a network of local experts, past-experience data and hazard mappings in Malawi and Mozambique."
For the second project, NET:New technologies and participatory approaches for disaster resilience, Dr Fonseca will also be part of a team to “develop the trial application of citizen-science in relation to disasters by collecting data through social media and other channels.”
In 2019, Dr Fonseca was awarded £20k from City’s Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) competition to support research into building more resilient communities in landslide-prone areas.
