City Law School hosts workshop on EU External Relations and International Law
On 12 June 2020, The City Law School (CLS) hosted an online workshop, titled, The European Union’s External Action and International Law: A View From the Outside.
The event was convened jointly by the CLS’ International Law and Affairs Group (ILAG) and the European Society of International Law Interest Group on the EU as a Global Actor. One of the aims of the workshop was to bring together ‘outside’ perspectives on the EU’s external relations. Held as an online workshop, the event brought together academics and practitioners in different parts of the world.
The workshop comprised five sessions, each examining a different aspect of the EU’s external relations. The first session of the workshop was chaired by event organizers, Dr Jed Odermatt (City Law School) and Professor Ramses A. Wessel (University of Groningen) and focused on the ‘EU and Global Values’.
The second session, chaired by Dr Melanie Fink (Leiden University), examined the ‘outside’ perspectives on the ‘EU and International Organizations’. The third session, chaired by Dr Tamás Molnár (European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, Vienna) examined the ‘EU and International Economic Law’. The fourth session was chaired by Professor Christine Kaddous (University of Geneva), and looked at regional perspectives on the EU’s external action, including Israel, Switzerland and Brazil. The final session, chaired by Dr Anne Thies (University of Reading) focused on various aspects of the EU’s interaction with international law.
