The world-renowned author and feminist campaigner Dr Nawal El Saadawi discussed her wide-ranging career and creative influences during a special talk at City, University of London.

In a conversation with the Head of the Department of English, Dr Patricia Moran, the Egyptian writer talked about the issues and experiences that had inspired her work, touching on themes such as religion, gender inequality, female genital mutilation, history, psychology and politics.

Dr Moran asked questions about issues raised by specific books in Dr El Saadawi’s vast bibliography, which includes more than 50 publications, and the author described the stories of her own and others’ lives that she has drawn on during her career.

After the interview, City students were invited by Dr El Saadawi to join her and Dr Moran in front of the audience and ask their own questions. Dr El Saadawi also met students studying on the BA English course at the university ahead of the event.

The event was organised by the Department of English in association with the Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team in the School of Arts and Social Sciences at City.
