A student team from The City Law School has qualified for the Grand Final of the European Law Moot Court competition, having won the regional final which was held between Thursday 8 – Sunday 11 February in Turin, Italy.

The team consists of three Gradaute Diploma in Law (GDL) students (Laura Wilson, Luke Ilott and Aloysius Atkinson) and a Bar Vocational Studies (BVS) student (Cameron Glynn). The team is coached by another former GDL student, Samuel Willis.

The European Law Moot Court competition is the most prestigious international EU law moot court competition, with the Grand Final being held at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg in Spring 2024, before Judges and Advocates General of the Court.

Panos Koutrakos, Professor of European Union Law and Jean Monnet Chair in European Law reflected:

This is a tremendous achievement: this competition is prestigious, attracts a great number of teams from the United States and Europe, and is extremely competitive. To have qualified for the final of the overall competition is not only a testament to the talent and hard work of these specific students. It also tells us a lot about the quality of students that our GDL programme attracts and the enthusiasm that EU law still generates amongst students.

City has already achieved success in the competition, as it won the final of the competition in 2017, with a team consisting of three GDL students and one Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) student.

City is the only UK university team to have won the competition, and also qualified for the grand final of the competition last year as well.

Senior Lecturer, Dr Frank Zhang, has been responsible for all administrative issues relating to the City team's involvement in the competition.
