Leading industry partners Canon Medical, Esaote, GE HealthCare, Intelligent Ultrasound and Siemens Healthineers recently came to City, University of London to offer a hands-on demonstration of cutting-edge ultrasound imaging technology and talks about the latest developments in abdominal ultrasound.

Taking the form of an educational and continuing professional development study day for students and practitioners, the ‘Advances in Abdominal Ultrasound’ event took place on Monday 27 November as part of the RDM032 Abdominal Ultrasound module for the Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound.

It was organised by Emily Skelton, Programme Director and Lecturer in Diagnostic Imaging (Medical Ultrasound) in the School of Health and Psychological Sciences (SHPS) at City. The vision for the event was to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, and provide an opportunity for the students to consolidate their theoretical knowledge from the University’s taught module in a practical setting.

Rapid advances in ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging technology is rapidly advancing, and ultrasound practitioners and educators have a continuing professional responsibility to ensure their knowledge and skills are up to date.

Following an introduction from Gill Harrison, Professional Officer for Ultrasound at the Society and College of Radiographers and Honorary Associate Professor in SHPS, the morning programme comprised a series of talks from industry partners showcasing the latest applications in abdominal ultrasound imaging, including advanced liver analysis, fusion imaging, and Doppler.

Students and other attendees also had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the technology, as the afternoon session provided a chance to observe and participate in live scanning demonstrations led by leading industry partners.

Speaking about the event, Gill said:

It was a great honour to officially open the event at City, having been involved with the ultrasound programme here for almost 25 years. The combination of talks about the latest equipment developments, hands-on practical demonstrations and a chance for students and clinical colleagues to interact and practice new techniques made for a really exciting day.

“There was a great buzz in the room all day and it’s thanks to the hard work of Emily, Robin and the team for putting together such an innovative and engaging programme.”

Hands-on experience

Besides the networking opportunities at the event, which was facilitated by the exhibition-style format, the practical and hands-on nature of the day enabled attendees to speak with industry and clinical partners, not only building working relationships, but also fostering future potential research and educational collaborations.

Speaking about the event, Emily said:

I would like to thank the vendors for their support and generous sponsorship to make this event possible. One of the strengths of the Medical Ultrasound programme at City is our relationship with industry and clinical partners, and this event demonstrated our commitment to excellence in ultrasound education and highlighted our innovative approaches to training by bringing everyone together to showcase the latest in imaging technology and techniques.

“Not only did it help to promote collaborative, multilateral learning in medical ultrasound, but it also supported student learning though hands-on training, and provided a unique experience in working with industry partners. I hope that all attendees found the event to be a valuable and enjoyable experience.”

Attendees also praised the mix of talks and practical demonstrations during the day, as well as the opportunity to try new technology and gain hands-on experience with application specialists. One participant echoed this sentiment and said:

"I think it was a really successful day and like nothing else available with other providers. Learning about future technologies and then exploring them with the hands-on session was really useful. I loved going round each station in small groups and using machines I'd not used before as well as meeting new fellow sonographers. Thanks to Emily for making it all happen and organising it so well."
