Sonia Sheila Kaur, a student on the BSc Mathematics and Finance programme is the winner of the 2021 Dean’s Award for Professional Excellence (DAPE) in the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering (SMCSE).

The DAPE was established by the School's Corporate Relations & Employability Unit (CREU) and seeks to recognise students who have produced excellent work during their placement year.

Sonia won her award for work done as a finance intern at CNN International Commercial (CNNIC). Anne Lloyd, Work-based Learning Advisor in the CREU says that during Sonia's placement, “she went on an incredible development journey in terms of her technical and interpersonal skills.”

“Working in a busy department, Sonia was exposed to different experiences, allowing her to apply her degree learnings and to grow professionally. From handling the month close process to presenting in the ‘employee spotlight’ segment of a large meeting attended by the corporation’s Chief Financial Officer, Sonia applied her calm and methodical approach to each opportunity, leading to her making impressive progress. To do so whilst working entirely from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic was truly a remarkable achievement”.

In 2020, the CREU placed 370 SMCSE students across all of its schemes including professional pathway, postgraduate and undergraduate internships and placements.
