A message from the President and Vice-President.

We understand that many of our staff, students and alumni will feel shocked, saddened and disturbed by the killing of George Floyd and subsequent events in the United States. Our sympathies are with Mr Floyd’s family and friends.

City abhors racism, is strongly committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and does not tolerate any forms of harassment and discrimination. However, we recognise that we cannot be complacent about racism within our own community and that inequalities continue to exist in society. As such we stand in solidarity with those in the USA, the UK and the rest of the world, who continue to face racism and discrimination.

The work we are doing to demonstrate our commitment to putting a stop to racism and advancing race equality is relevant and important. We are committed to making City an inclusive environment to study and work free from discrimination. Colleagues, including those involved in the Race Equality Charter submission and members of our BAME Staff Network, have been driving forward activity to help us achieve this aim.

But, there is a role for every one of us at City to play.

We, the City leadership, are re-examining the ways in which we can support this work directly. We know that learning about the inequalities faced by the Black community and reflecting on them, is crucial to enabling us to stand proactively against racism more broadly and to challenge any structural and institutional racism that perpetuates such injustices.

One of the ways we can further understand and educate ourselves is through reading. Staff can access material through the ‘Diversify Your Mind’ book club at City and students through the recommended reading list, both created by Dr Kavita Powley, Race Equality Manager.

There is support available for anyone at City who has been affected by recent events, either through the Wellbeing@City hub, or through the following groups and networks:
