China’s ‘Great Firewall’ has been described as the world’s most sophisticated system of online censorship.
The country boasts more than 800 million internet users and online commerce is thriving but voices critical of the ruling Communist Party are quashed and information the government deems sensitive strictly controlled.
James Griffiths, a Hong Kong based journalist for CNN International has spent years investigating the issue and has written a book, The Great Firewall of China – How to Build and Control an Alternative Version of the Internet.
He’ll be joining us to discuss his findings, including how China is exporting its technology abroad and how companies like Google and Facebook are compromising core values to gain access to the Chinese market.
