Book launch for Dr Thomas Davies' NGOs: A New History of Transnational Civil Society.
LOCATION: Room DLG08, Social Science Building
BOOK A PLACE: Contact firstname.lastname@example.org
Dr Davies discusses his landmark historical account of international non-governmental organizations from the French Revolution to the present. He explores previously neglected aspects of the historical evolution of international NGOs, including their roots beyond the 'Western' context and the cyclicality of their development since the late eighteenth century. By revealing the role of civil society rather than governmental actors in the major transformations of the past two-and-a-half centuries, he challenges conventional understandings of the evolution of world history. He concludes by evaluating the trajectory of transnational civil society in the post-9/11 and post-financial crisis eras.
The discussion will be followed by a drinks reception where copies of NGOs: A New History of Transnational Civil Society will be available.
