Speaker: Dr Sarah Lamble - Birkbeck College, School of Law
Series: Centre for Crime and Justice Research Seminar Series
Dr Lamble's paper considers the social, legal and spatial regulation of two public expressions of dissent that occurred in London 2011: first, the August 'riots' that took place in Tottenham, Enfield, Hackney, Brixton and Croydon, and second the Occupy London Stock Exchange protest that took place at St. Paul's Cathedral. The paper explores how the legal and institutional regulation of both events was tied to the spatiality of their expression, particularly in terms of the nature of reclaiming space in each situation and the way in which certain bodies were deemed to belong or not belong in specific places. Further examining the legal responses to each event, the paper considers how such responses shape the conditions of what is defined as legitimate and illegitimate dissent.
