Music of Nikolay Medtner

Series: City University London Concert Series

Medtner. Sonate-Idylle, Op. 56
Beethoven. Sonata in E flat, Op. 27 No. 1, 'Quasi una fantasia'
Medtner. Tales Op. 26 No. 3 and Op. 14 No. 2
Medtner. Sonate-Ballade, Op. 27

Prizewinning pianist Alexander Karpeyev plays the final recital of his Doctoral of Musical Arts programme. The programme of the evening reflects his research topic - performance practice in the music of Russian composer-pianist Nikolay Medtner. The pairs of Medtner's Sonatas and Tales demonstrate his fluency in both large and small-scale musical forms and illustrate the main tenets of his philosophy of piano playing.  The fifth work is a Beethoven Sonata, chosen because Medtner deeply admired Beethoven, and even called himself 'Beethoven's pupil'.
