Prizewinning pianist Alexander Karpeyev plays the final recital of his Doctoral of Musical Arts programme. The programme of the evening reflects his research topic - performance practice in the music of Russian composer-pianist Nikolay Medtner. The pairs of Medtner's Sonatas and Tales demonstrate his fluency in both large and small-scale musical forms and illustrate the main tenets of his philosophy of piano playing. The fifth work is a Beethoven Sonata, chosen because Medtner deeply admired Beethoven, and even called himself 'Beethoven's pupil'.
