Better off with the EU? Comparisons of French and British views

Speakers: Meg Hillier MP, Axelle Lemaire MP (France), Claude Moraes MEP

Panel discussion to consider the benefits of the UK's membership of the European Union and to discuss wider issues from the French diaspora community in London.

Meg Hillier, MP for Hackney South and Shoreditch. Meg Hillier was elected Member of Parliament for Hackney South and Shoreditch in 2005. Meg is Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Nigeria and Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Cycling. Meg is also a member of the House of Commons public spending watchdog the Public Accounts Committee. Meg was a local councillor for eight years, and was the youngest ever Mayor of Islington in 1998/99. She was elected to the London Assembly to represent Hackney, Islington and Waltham Forest in 2000. Meg was elected to Parliament in 2005 and was a junior minister at the Home Office from 2007 to 2010.

Axelle Lemaire MP is a member of the French Parliament, representing French citizens living in Northern Europe (Iceland, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania). She is also National Secretary of the Socialist Party in charge of Human Rights. Axelle is the Secretary of the Law Committee and a member of the European Affairs Committee. She is particularly interested in the protection of human rights and civil liberties, European politics, the digital economy and entrepreneurship. Axelle is also Chair of the Assemblée Nationale's Franco-British Parliamentary group.

Claude Moraes is Labour Member of the European Parliament for London and Deputy Leader of the European Parliamentary Labour Party (EPLP). First elected to the European Parliament in 1999, Claude was the first  Asian origin MEP. He was reelected in 2009 where he led the London list.He is currently Spokesperson for the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament for Home Affairs and Justice. Claude was previously Director of JCWI, the national migration and refugee charity and Chief Executive of the Immigrants' Aid Trust.

The discussion will be followed by a small drinks reception.
