The first Ethnomusicology Research seminar on 2010 will be presented by Timothy Cooley from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Flow, Play, and Musicking about Surfing
This presentation is an exploratory search for useful frames for
interpreting the often celebrated but largely unanalyzed relationships
between surfing and musicking. I consider how surfers talk about music, and
musicians talk about surfing, and compare this to how surfers talk about
surfing and musicians talk about musicking. I ask if musicking about
surfing is a way of expressing something of the profoundly experiential but
relatively uncommunicative phenomenon of wave riding. In other cases,
surfers speak of music providing an affective “feel” for the act of surfing.
