Who is it for?

This course is suitable for individuals who relish problem-solving and have a strong desire to design and optimise advanced machines (be they driverless cars, high-speed trains, robotic manufacturing systems, tidal power stations or solar-powered generators) through the novel application of science and mathematics.

Objectives

This BEng Mechanical Engineering undergraduate programme encourages critical thinking and foster curiosity through both teamwork and independent
study. The design exercises provide the opportunity for students to be engaged in cross-disciplinary challenges, preparing the way for tackling larger problems that span traditional engineering boundaries. The courses are led by academic staff from our active Research Centres, supported by specialist professionals from industry.

Our Mechanical engineering degree encompasses the remarkably successful disciplines of material sciences, thermodynamics, solid and fluid mechanics and robotics.
This degree will train you in all aspects necessary for a successful career as a mechanical engineer.

Requirements and how to apply

Entry requirements

  • 'A’ Level: ABB (including ‘A’ Level Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry or Biology).
  • Tariff: 128 tariff points including ‘A’ Level Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry or Biology. See the UCAS website for information on the new tariff.
  • BTEC: D*DD in Engineering with minimum grade B in ‘A’ Level Mathematics or Physics.
  • IB: 33 points total including Higher Level Mathematics and Physics at grade 6.

The following is also required:

  • GCSE: A minimum of grade 4(C) in GCSE English.

Other suitable qualifications

  • Extended Project Qualification (EPQ): We welcome applications that include the EPQ. Where relevant, this may be included in our offer, resulting in an ‘A’ Level offer reduced by one grade.

If you do not qualify for direct entry, you may wish to take a foundation programme first. These programmes are designed to prepare students for entry to City's undergraduate courses.

English requirements

If your first language is not English, we will require evidence of English language proficiency. We accept the following:

  • IELTS: 6.0 overall with a minimum 6.0 in each component
  • IB: English as a first language, standard level grade 4 and as a second language, higher level grade 4

Visa requirements

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study.

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course. There are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than six months
  • Students on courses of less than six months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English language course.

More about fees

* The current tuition fee for UK and EU students for the 2017/18 academic year is £9,250. However, as a result of recent UK Government legislation, this fee will be subject to an inflationary increase for students commencing their studies in 2018. The size of this increase will be limited to the Student Fees Inflation Index as determined by the UK Government’s Office for Budget Responsibility. This index is derived from the All Items Retail Prices Index. We will confirm the fee for the first year of your studies (2018/19) to you in writing as soon as we receive confirmation of the revised fee: this is likely to be in early 2018. Fees in each subsequent year of study will similarly be subject to an annual increase limited to the Student Fees Inflation Index and we will confirm any change to the annual tuition fee for each of your subsequent years of study to you in writing prior to you commencing each subsequent year of study.

The School has its own dedicated placements team that provides on-hand placement and internship support and guidance for students throughout their studies.

Our team of placement specialists, the Professional Liaison Unit, has extensive experience in helping students to secure professional experience across a range of industries. The team also has longstanding relationships with an impressive and diverse range of companies spanning both large and small organisations

You can undertake a summer internship at the end of each academic year or opt to spend a year on an industry placement at the end of your third year - if you are on the MEng (Hons) route.

Placements are paid, and are a fantastic way to gain professional experience in a relevant field as part of your degree. Undertaking a placement year could also count towards the experience requirement for a professional engineering qualification.

Placements are highly encouraged at City; students that complete a placement year benefit from gaining professional experience working on real-life projects and are also more likely to; achieve higher grades, secure a graduate-level job and earn a higher salary.

Mechanical lab

Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics courses benefit from recently redeveloped facilities with modern teaching lecture theatres equipped with the latest interactive AV systems and modern IT laboratories which are updated annually.

A dynamic virtual learning environment (Moodle) provides students with access to online course materials, resources, interactive activities, assessment and communication tools.

Specialist facilities include flight deck, motion simulators, wind tunnels, optical IC Engines, optical compressors, optical fuel injection systems, flywheel, formula car simulator, micro Turbine, cavitating flows, high performance computing, flight test course.

Tennis Ball Server Project at City

The engineering design project was set up for teams of undergraduate mechanical, aeronautics, electrical and electronic engineering students to design, build and demonstrate a tennis ball serving machine that uses a standard liquid CO2 3kg bottle as source of energy.

Teaching and learning

Our approach is to encourage critical thinking and foster curiosity through both teamwork and independent study. The design exercises provide the opportunity for students to be engaged in cross-disciplinary challenges, preparing the way for tackling larger problems that span traditional engineering boundaries.

The course is led by academic staff from our active Research Centres, supported by specialist professionals from industry. The course is delivered through lectures, tutorials, group design exercises, laboratory classes and engineering workshops. Learning involves a combination of theoretical, experimental and computational study.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed using a variety of methods, depending on module choices:

  • Practice Assessment Document (PAD): used to demonstrate achievement of practice competencies and also to record the number of hours of practice experience
  • Written assignments, including essays: these may take the form of care studies in which you will be expected to relate your essay to a particular service user or as support another assessment such as a poster presentation
  • Written examinations: including short answer questions, multiple choice questions, calculations, scenario based
  • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCEs): practical skills assessments which enable you to demonstrate particular clinical, communication or teaching skills
  • Dissertation: this final project will enable you to choose a relevant topic of interest to you and demonstrate an in depth knowledge of this.

Percentage of the course assessed by coursework

The balance of assessment by examination, practical examination and assessment by coursework will to some extent depend on the optional modules you choose. The approximate percentage of the course assessment, based on 2016/17 entry is as follows:

Year 1

50% written, 0% practical, 50% coursework

Year 2

53% written, 0% practical, 47% coursework

Year 3

48% written, 0% practical, 52% coursework.

Assessment

Assessment is by coursework and examinations. Group learning and communication skills are addressed through design studies and presentations. Practical and technical skills are assessed through laboratory work, data analysis and project reports.

Grades obtained in each year count towards the final degree classification, with increasing weight given to the later years.

Modules

Year 1

Year one is common to all of the engineering courses. Students study the science (largely physics) and mathematics that underpin engineering principles. They are also instructed in how to develop computer program, a skill that is evermore relevant and valuable. Group exercises provide students with the opportunities to undertake preliminary engineering designs.

Year 2

Students begin to specialise in year two, advancing their knowledge of solid and fluid mechanics while also studying measurement, data analysis and mechatronics. Students registered on the BEng degree, who average at least 60 per cent at the end of year two, are encouraged to transfer to the MEng degree.

Overall workload

Most contact hours will take the form of lectures, interactive sessions, practical workshops and small group classes, supported by a personal tutorial system. The number will decrease as you progress and you become more able to direct your own learning. Approximate study time based on 2016/17 entry is as follows:

Career prospects

Mechanical Engineering graduates work in industries such as transport, power generation, manufacturing, automotive and oil and gas exploration. Our recent graduates have obtained posts within Ford, Howden, Delphi Diesel Systems, AVL, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar Land Rover, Tube  Line and Holroyd.

These engineers are involved in areas as diverse as product development, advanced computer-based design, computational fluid dynamics simulations, robotics, energy conservation, maintenance, decommissioning and engineering management.
