The UK’s gambling and gaming industries have changed significantly over the last decade. Advances in new technology and the changing nature of our high streets have impacted on the access, availability and advertising of gambling and gaming products in the UK. With betting shops now in prominent positions on every high street, casinos open 24/7 in most cities, the availability of mobile (remote) gambling and initial free to use social gaming apps; gambling and social gaming are far more accessible than they have ever been. More young people than ever before are participating in these activities and the statistics show that they may be at risk of developing harmful habits that have the potential to contribute negatively to their mental health and wellbeing.

At YGAM we believe it is important to educate young people about these potential risks as part of a wider Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE), digital resilience or life skills curriculum. This will help young people to make informed decisions around their gambling or gaming activity and signpost where to go for help should they feel they are spending too much time or money.

The symposium will bring together academics, education and public health experts, young people & students, teachers and youth practitioners and colleagues from the gambling and gaming industries. Delegates will hear from a variety of speakers sharing their insights around the role of preventative education in minimising gaming or gambling-related harm among young people. Dr Margaret Carran from City, University of London will also share her independent, pro-bono evaluation of the effectiveness of the YGAM education programme.
