Civil Engineering Foundation Programme

The Foundation course provides a pathway to BEng and MEng degree courses in Civil Engineering.

Full-time: 4 years for BEng degree with a foundation year; 5 years for MEng degree with a foundation year. This is a BEng degree with integrated Foundation Year. The first year (Year 0) is held at Westminster Kingsway College.

Who is it for?

If you wish to study Civil Engineering or MEng Structural Engineering at City, University of London, but do not satisfy the entry requirements, the Civil Engineering Foundation course can be the first of a four year BEng (or five year MEng) degree.


The emphasis in the Foundation course is on developing your study skills and ability in mathematics and mechanics.

The course also suits mature applicants who need to update their technical knowledge and study skills.

Entry requirements

  • 'A' Level: 80 UCAS tariff points including Mathematics at 'A' Level grade C or 'AS' Level grade A.

Visa requirements

If you are not from the European Economic Area / Switzerland and you are coming to study in the UK, you may need to apply for a visa or entry clearance to come to the UK to study.

The way that you apply may vary depending on the length of your course. There are different rules for:

  • Students on courses of more than six months
  • Students on courses of less than six months
  • Students on a pre-sessional English language course.

If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study in the UK, you cannot undertake any City courses on a part-time basis.

Teaching and learning

As a Foundation course student, you will take most of your classes at Westminster Kingsway College. Some laboratory classes are taken at City, University of London. A key element of the course is the tutorial support provided and the emphasis on the development of study skills. This makes the course suitable for mature students who lack formal qualifications or who are returning to study after some years. There is some flexibility to change to a different engineering course after the foundation year, subject to the agreement of the course director concerned.

You may use the study and social facilities at both City, University of London and Westminster Kingsway College. Assessment is by a combination of formal examinations and coursework.

Further study

Students who successfully complete the Foundation course may transfer onto BEng Civil Engineering, MEng Civil Engineering or MEng Structural Engineering at City.
