Music Business: Records, Publishing and Finance Short Courses
The Music Business: Records, Publishing and Finance short course is intended to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of a record company. This will include budgets, royalties, cash-flow streams and international licensing. There will be a guest speaker for one of the lectures, who will be a successful record producer. All aspects of music publishing will be thoroughly covered in this Music Business Course.
Students are also encouraged to bring in a piece of music they are interested in to stimulate a group discussion. Some of the students who have attended this Music Business course, have gone on to employment within the music business.

David Ambrose has worked for several major music companies, including Director of A&R at EMI Records and Managing Director of MCA (now Universal), While at EMI he looked after Queen Pink Floyd and Kraftwerk, DuranDuran and the Pet Shop Boys. He has personally signed many major artistes including Radiohead, DuranDuran, Pet Shop Bloys, Transvision Vamp and for Publishing, The Sex Pistols, AC/DC, Blondie, Kate Bush, Tom Robinson, Paul Young, Vapours, Dexys Midnight Runners Kaja GooGoo and many others.

Dennis Charles
Guest lecture on the creative aspect on production/song writing. Has produced and written for Eternal and Cleopatra and written and produced for huge hip hop acts. Previously worked on production with Rod Stewart.
Matt Bolton
Consultant on Royalties-finance for Universal music publishing. Matt will give a talk on performing rights and mechanical royalties and income flows from these sources and other aspects.
Eligibility
There are no eligibility requirements to attend this Music Business course, apart from a genuine interest in the music business.
English Requirements
Music Business course applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.
What will I learn?
You will map the role of artiste and repertoire within the record and music publishing industries; identify the key functions and responsibilities of the artiste and repertoire team; understand the anatomy of a hit song; prepare budgets for recording sessions; understand the process of recording; and identify the main characteristics of particular music markets in the UK.
Teaching and Assessment
The tutor issues printed handouts of budgets and other relevant information being discussed. The projector and white board are also used to identify certain royalty rates and other figures being discussed or explained. There is always a guest speaker, to talk about finance, or producing. Sometimes there will be a visit to a recording studio, if one is available.Recommended Reading
