Alumni Mentoring Network

Both City alumni and students can access targeted careers guidance through the Alumni Mentoring Network.

In this increasingly competitive employment market there is no substitute for one-to-one advice from people who have been professionally successful. The Alumni Mentoring Network offers two ways for alumni who would like to become Mentors to use their experience to provide realistic advice about breaking into a particular field or suggest ways for Mentees to develop their careers:

Careers Network Online  – Mentees (students and alumni) email any relevant Alumni Mentor as and when they need to

Professional Mentoring Scheme – delivered by City's Centre for Career and Skills Development, Mentors (City alumni and volunteers from big business / the public sector) receive training to support one Student Mentee over a set period of time.

For alumni, being a mentor through either Careers Network Online or the Professional Mentoring Scheme, is a fulfilling way to meet other professionals, develop new skills and gain valuable volunteering experience. It is also just one of the many opportunities alumni have to stay connected with the university.

   Careers Network Online

Careers Network Online is currently made up of 2000 Alumni Mentors, representing 85 countries and more than 20 professions and industries. Alumni Mentors provide careers advice and professional development guidance to current students and other alumni. As former students, Alumni Mentors have a unique understanding of what it is like to study at the university. They also have the experience of graduating and entering the job market with a City degree.

How Careers Network Online works

Each Alumni Mentor has an entry in our password protected online database which includes the following information:

  1. Course studied
  2. Year graduated
  3. Job title
  4. Company
  5. Notes on area of career experience

Based on this information, the Mentee looking for an Alumni Mentor selects somebody they think can help them and uses our automated system to make contact - the Alumni Mentor’s e-mail address is NOT be shown at this stage. The Alumni Mentor then decides whether or not they can help and, if so, how they want to proceed.

Next time you apply for a job or send off your CV, you can show you belong to the City University Alumni Network by proudly displaying your 'alumni.city.ac.uk' address. (Please note that this is an email forwarding service - it does not provide you with an email account or storage space. You must have an existing email account for this service to work).

   Professional Mentoring Scheme

The Professional Mentoring Scheme is delivered by City's Centre for Careers and Skills Development. It pairs City students (home and EU) in one-to-one relationships with professionals who act as their mentor for up to 6 months. When mentee and mentor are first matched, they complete a learning contract which lays out what they hope to achieve during the partnership. They then meet regularly throughout the scheme to pursue these aims.

Mentees receive training and support on how to get the most out of the mentoring relationship, everyone receives a certificate for completing the scheme and there is a trophy for the most successful mentor / mentee relationship of the year.

The scheme recruits City University alumni to act as mentors as well as professionals from big businesses and public sector bodies.

Volunteering as a Professional Mentor

The Centre for Careers and Skills are looking for people from a range of professions to become mentors. They find that there is a particular interest in mentors that work in the City but have a shortage of mentors from the legal and media professions.

If you are City alumnus and you would like to volunteer as a Professional Mentor, please contact Thalia Anagnostopoulou; +44 (0) 20 7040 0288.

"My mentoring experience has been very enjoyable. Having been a student at the university, I am fully aware of the pressures faced in the final year. Mixing studies with applying for jobs can be an arduous task. Being able to offer valuable insight and experience to a current student enabled me to give back to the university where I had an amazing four years of my life.

I would recommend mentoring to anyone to ensure students can benefit from sound advice. The time commitments are not much but the personal satisfaction is immense."
