During the three years of your Children’s Nursing BSc, you will learn to develop the skills to care professionally and compassionately for children, young people and their families, through a combination of theoretical study and clinical experience.
Focus on the foundations for nursing, learning about evidence informed practice and the biological sciences. Undertake practice placements to begin to build your practical skills.
Foundations of Evidence Informed Nursing Practice (30 credits)
This module is the foundation for developing your nursing practice and professional identity. The module will enable you to explore the fundamental principles of nursing and become a reflective and independent learner.
Foundations of Biological Sciences for Nursing Practice ( 30 Credits )
The aim of the module is to provide you with a variety of learning experiences in applied biological sciences theory. Undertaking this module will enable you to develop a knowledge and understanding of biological concepts that are key to understanding nursing care.
Biopsychosocial Development Across the Lifecourse ( 30 Credits )
This module aims to offer you an understanding of the biopsychosocial model across the life course so that you have an appreciation of how people develop and what influences this development.
Mental Health and Wellbeing in Integrated Care ( 15 Credits )
In this module you will learn the integration between the physical and psychological challenges that people may face. You will examine where these challenges may result in ill health and how healthcare staff can prevent or manage such effects.
Practice 1- Foundations for Nursing Care ( 15 Credits )
The module will consider a range of subject areas relevant to physical and mental healthcare across the lifespan that will contribute to your development as a registered nurse within your field of practice.
Explore person-centred care in the context of acute and long-term care. Pursue specific clinical interests on a two-week elective practice placement, in addition to course clinical placements.
Promotion of Wellbeing and Prevention of Ill-Health Across Health and Social Care ( 15 credits )
This module will provide you with an overview of primary and secondary level initiatives to prevent disease and injury, as well as an understanding of theories, policies and practice relating to health promotion.
Acute Care Management (15 credits)
This module will assist you to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to recognise, manage and care for service users and carers that are experiencing an acute health event. This could affect their physical or mental health or a combination of both.
Working Collaboratively with People with Long Term Conditions (15 credits)
This module will enable you to develop the knowledge, skills and values to support people experiencing long term care and to understand how people live with, make sense of, and self-manage long term conditions.
Pathophysiology and Therapeutics for Nursing Practice (30 credits)
This module will build upon your biological sciences knowledge and will focus on pathophysiology and therapeutic interventions across a range of relevant disorders. This will develop your understanding of the essential biological principles necessary to provide safe, effective integrated nursing care.
Critical Use of Evidence to Inform Decision Making in Practice (15 credits)
This module will provide you with an introduction to the critical use of evidence to inform decisions you make in practice. You will have the opportunity to develop the skills required to support decision making when clinical questions arise in your own practice.
Practice 2- Applying Knowledge and Skills for Person-Centred Care for Practice (15 credits)
This module aims to integrate both the Simulated Practice and your placement learning experience. This will enable you to further develop and build upon your professional knowledge, skills, values and attitudes so you can effectively provide safe, person-centred care.
Family Centred Practice: Challenging Perspectives of Risk and Resilience (All fields) (15 credits)
This module aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of the actual and potential role of the nurse in leading and implementing family centred health promotion and prevention.
Communities and Health (All fields) (15 credits)
This module aims to give you an understanding of how people within communities can improve their health and where solutions to health problems are not solely about the provision of traditional services in the community.
Introduction to Critical Care Nursing (Children’s Nursing) (15 credits)
This module aims to extend your knowledge and understanding of relevant disease processes and medical, surgical and nursing interventions so that you can extend your nursing practice in relation to the management of the child in Critical Care.
Working Collaboratively with People with Mental Health Issues (Adult and Children’s Nursing) (15 credits)
The purpose of this module is to further develop your knowledge and understanding of how to improve support and outcomes for people suffering from both physical and mental health challenges.
Contemporary Issues in Sex and Sexuality (All fields) (15 credits)
As it is essential that nurses have a baseline understanding of sexual health issues, this module will improve knowledge, develop skills, challenge understanding and enable you to share experiences with your cohort. Topics include gender identity, sexual disorders, and promoting sexual health.
Global Health (All fields) (15 credits)
This module will enable you to develop an understanding of the key challenges and concepts that influence global health. You will gain a perspective on health exploring current and emerging transnational issues related to population’s health and wellbeing.
Contemporary Issues within Adolescent Health (All fields) (15 credits)
This module will enable students across all nursing fields to explore the wider and local issues that impact on adolescent health. There is also the opportunity for an off-site trip to a specialist adolescent unit and meet staff working within this specialist area.
Understanding and Caring for People who Use Substances (Adult and Mental Health) (15 credits)
The aim of this module is to develop an in-depth understanding of the causes and consequences of substance use within a biopsychosocial context. You will develop this knowledge further in order that you can apply this knowledge when encountering people who use substances.
Preparing for Specialist Practice in Primary and Community Care (All) (15 credits)
The aim of this module is to enable you to develop a comprehensive and critical understanding of the specialist roles relevant to your field of practice in community and public health nursing.
Learn about leading and managing in professional practice. Complete a 6,000-word dissertation on a topic of your choice. Spend 12 weeks of your course on clinical placement, to transition from education to full-time professional practice.
Leading and Managing Others (15 credits)
The intention of this module is to support and guide you in the development of the skills and knowledge required to lead and manage others to deliver high quality health care for all service users, carers and families.
Integrated Approaches to Complex Care (15 credits)
The aim of this module is to prepare you to work in partnership with people with complex needs, their family and/or friends, and other professionals across health and social care, across varied health and care settings, and throughout the life course.
Principles of Prescribing (30 credits)
This module will equip you with the skills and knowledge to complete prescribing qualification once you have registered and have attained sufficient competency. This will involve using evidence-based interventions to maximise the therapeutic benefits and minimise adverse effects of medicines.
Developing Advanced Knowledge and Skills for Professional Practice (15 credits)
The purpose of this module is to expand your knowledge, skills and critical understanding of advance practice intervention to perform all required nursing procedures and effectively manage devices safely while meeting people’s needs with compassion, supported with evidence based, person-centred care.
Dissertation (30 credits)
This module will enable you to build on the research knowledge of adult nursing and apply critical appraisal skills through undertaking a review of the research literature on a policy or clinically relevant question in a systematic way, written up as a dissertation.
Practice 3- Preparing to be a Proficient Practitioner (15 credits)
This module will also focus on the importance of valuing your own personal development and will encourage you to critical reflective and evaluate your learning as you prepare to be a registered nurse.

Teaching and assessment
The Children’s Nursing degree is taught by academics who are leaders in their field of practice and education. Many are also active researchers and clinicians as well as teaching staff, with their work directly influencing today’s practice; this means that you will study the most up-to-date curriculum and practices, directly from those informing the nursing profession.
The course is delivered through facilitated group work and enquiry-based learning opportunities with access to online course materials, resources, interactive activities and assessment and communication tools. An online clinical skills resource provides step-by-step video demonstrations of clinical skills.
You will be assessed using a variety of methods, depending on module choices:
- Practice Assessment Document (PAD): used to demonstrate achievement of practice competencies and also to record the number of hours of practice experience
- Written assignments, including essays: these may take the form of care studies in which you will be expected to relate your essay to a particular service user or as support another assessment such as a poster presentation
- Written examinations: including short answer questions, multiple choice questions, calculations, scenario based
- Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCEs): practical skills assessments which enable you to demonstrate particular clinical, communication or teaching skills
- Dissertation: this final project will enable you to choose a relevant topic of interest to you and demonstrate an in depth knowledge of this.
Percentage of the course assessed by coursework
The balance of assessment by examination, practical examination and assessment by coursework will to some extent depend on the optional modules you choose. The approximate percentage of the course assessment, based on 2018/19 entry is as follows:
Overall the programme hours are 2475 theory and 2512.5 practice experience. When in practice you will work the equivalent of 37.5 hours per week.
Theoretical hours will consist of approximately 22 direct contact hours per 150 total hours allocated for each 15 credit module.
In the remaining theoretical hours you will be expected to pursue guided independent study and self-directed study, some of which may be online.
Time is also allocated within the programme for you to complete your assessments.

The fees indicated are for undergraduate entry in the 2022/23 academic year only. Fees for future years may be subject to an inflationary increase, which is normally 2%.

On successful graduation you will be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, enabling you to practice as a children's nurse in the UK and overseas (though additional registration maybe required in some countries).

Our Clinical Skills Centre designed to mirror 'real' health care environments with simulated 6-bedded ward to provide an adaptable, modern and appropriate space for both teaching and research.
Our Department of Nursing has access to simulators and realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment.
In addition, medium-fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements.
