Child and Adolescent Mental Health Course overview
The module content will cover: the context of Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMH) services, aetiology of common mental health disorders for children and young people, legislation and guidelines, psychological developmental theories, Adverse Childhood Experiences and working with Trauma and skills for practice.
It is taught by academic staff and clinicians with a strong evidence base and clinical focus.
Who is it for?
The module is suitable for those working in CAMHS and Adult Mental Health Services, who wish to know more about how adverse early years experiences influence adult mental health. It is also suitable for people working in Education (Teachers, SENCOs, Schools (SN), Primary Care (ACP, HV) and Public Health Services (SCPHN) Social Work and allied professions.

The assignment is in two parts: a case presentation (April 2025) and an essay (May 2025).

What will I learn?
This interprofessional module will examine a range of mental health difficulties and diagnosis experienced by children and young people. The module content and teaching methods are designed to enhance your knowledge of legislation, research and the application of systemic approaches to assessment, formulation and intervention strategies transferable to your specific area of practice. Taught sessions will also include peer group learning “learning by doing” providing opportunity to reflexively learn together, challenging our own position, invite other ways of thinking and consider emotional and culturally sensitive ways of working.
Assessment and certificates
There are two assignments each worth 50% of the overall module mark: a case presentation in April 2024 and a 1500 word assignment due in May 2024.

This course is worth 15 credits toward eligible programmes.
Eligibility
Working in mental health practice, primary care, allied health or social services, or education.
Entry requirements: third year undergraduate/ professional training entry for MSc.
English requirements
For those students whose first language is not English the following qualification is also required: IELTS: 7.0
