About

Overview

Dr Buchanan is, from 2014, the Director of the Centre for Human-Computer Interaction Design, one of the University's largest research centres with 10 faculty members and many PhD students and research associates.

George's research interests surround information interaction: from web search, through browsing digital libraries, to accessing information on a mobile phone.

Dr. Buchanan is an investigator of two current EPSRC funded projects, CHI+MED, which seeks to improve the safety of medical devices, and PLanComPS, which is investigating how to provide semantic libraries of programming language fragments in a way that encourages re-use of semantic specifications when creating new programming languages. He also has ongoing links with businesses such as Seeper and HubTV.

Current collaborations include two projects with University College London and Swansea University, and an ongoing involvement with the New Zealand Digital Library Project at the University of Waikato.

Research

In 2014, Dr Buchanan was General Chair for the combined ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries, and the Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries. Previously he has been Program Chair for the Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries (TPDL 2012) in 2013, and program co-chair for the International Asia-Pacific Conference on Digital Libraries (ICADL) in 2013.

He is also currently the Research Chair for the BCS Interaction Special Interest Group.

Current research projects

- CHI+MED, a major four-site grant involving University College London, Queen Mary College London, Swansea University and City University London. Dr Buchanan's PhD student Jonathan Day is working with him on investigating how to better support human resilience through the design of user interfaces.

- PLanCompS, investigating how to support the design of programming languages through the use of the concept of 'funcons'. Another significant project with Swansea University, Royal Holloway College London, City University London and a variety of associates from across Europe.

- Learnmore, a project with the Law School and the Librarian for Law at City University, investigating how to support the learning of law students via a mobile application.

- MoPED, investigating how to interleave the use of mobile phones and large public electronic displays.

- HubTV Knowledge Transfer Partnership, working with local media experts HubTV on the next generation of interfaces for interactive video.

Further details of the above will appear shortly, together with details of previous projects.
