International Dispute Settlement

This module focuses on mechanisms aimed at securing the peaceful settlement of disputes in international relations, with particular emphasis on the voluntary creation of jurisdiction under international law, on the sources of law employed by courts and principles of interpretation and application of international norms.

The module aims to facilitate the understanding of the difference between judicial and diplomatic methods of dispute settlement and the limits to the jurisdiction of courts under international law; the functioning of the ICJ will be particularly explored, as well as its relationship with UN political bodies.
